What You Didn't See On TV At The 2018 Golden Globes
There were trophies. There were black dresses. There was a march. There was drama — and that's just what we saw at the 2018 Golden Globes on Jan. 7, 2017. What went down behind the scenes was almost just as incredible. Here's everything you (and the TV cameras) missed from the big night.
Seth Meyers had help from his wife
Host Seth Meyers told The Hollywood Reporter that his wife, Alexi Ashe, helped him prepare his remarks for the show, especially concerning sexual misconduct in Hollywood.
"We have at least a slight advantage in that we've been having those conversations each night on our show, addressing that and other issues that don't naturally lend themselves to a lightness of mood ... I had conversations with my wife and with the women on this staff, and we all agreed it's an opportunity to be able to say some things that you wouldn't be able to say in previous years," he said. "My wife was an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, and for two years she prosecuted misdemeanor sexual assault [cases]. This is stuff we talk about all the time at home, so this year has been a convergence of our worlds. I don't know if I would've wanted to do this without her counsel in talking about it, and she's a smart enough woman to know that I probably shouldn't have done it without her help."
Security was tighter than ever
Security was stricter than ever before at the 2018 Golden Globes, reported Deadline. Security measures included a four-mile wraparound street closure blocking any non-Golden Globes event traffic from the show and after-party areas and multiple checkpoints at various areas on and near the premises.
A law enforcement source told Deadline, "There will be a very clear heightened police presence over even last year that attendees will see. There will also be a lot you won't see but will be in place within the perimeter too."
Everyone fangirled over Ashley Judd
Actress Ashley Judd, who spoke out numerous times about her sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein, was reportedly the lady of the hour at a pre-Golden Globes part. A source for Page Six, "Everyone was coming up to her wanting to talk to her and commend her. She was all smiles. She was happy to engage with guests. She had a lengthy conversation with Joan Collins."
Other stars joined the movement from afar
Though Jennifer Lopez was in Puerto Rico doing charity and hurricane relief work with boyfriend Alex Rodriguez during the Golden Globes, she still showed her support for the Time's Up campaign, giving a speech in all black.
"We are humbled and proud to be a part of this effort. You know, today is the Golden Globes in Los Angeles and a lot of the women with the hashtag '#TimesUp' are standing up for equality, to be treated equally, and for sexual harassment," Lopez said, choking up. "I stand here today in black doing the same from far away. It's the same thing with here in Puerto Rico we want to be treated equally."
People reported that other stars who showed their support away from the actual event included Hilary Duff, an ill Anne Hathaway, Zoe Saldana, and Gabrielle Union, as did Hilarie Burton, to whom Ben Affleck previously apologized for groping.
Catt Sadler was celebrated
After E! News host Catt Sadler quit and revealed she made a lot less money than her co-anchor Jason Kennedy, a slew of celebrities have gathered in her corner — and Amy Schumer made sure that stars didn't let the pay disparity go by the wayside on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.
"If you're on the carpet tonight or at home post in support and ask @eentertainment what happened," Schumer captioned a photo of Sadler hours before the show. "We thought you would be for pay equality and say #imwithcattsad @iamcattsadler."
Several stars took heed: Debra Messing called out E! News during an interview with ... E! News. Chutzpah! Eva Longoria, in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, told him (via Page Six), "We support gender equity and equal pay and we hope that E! follows that lead with Catt as well. We stand with you, Catt."
Sadler told Page Six she was thankful for the support. "I am immensely grateful for the outpouring of support today," she said. "Thank you to Amy, Debra, Eva, Brie, Julianne and so many more women using their voices on behalf of us all."
Evan Rachel Wood may have inspired further action
The night before the Golden Globes, Evan Rachel Wood tweeted, "Hey! Persons attending the Golden Globes this Sun. If you see a predator but don't feel you can say anything publicly, gather a handful of people and make a circle around them. The room will know." She added, "We are going to see some circles this weekend, or because of this idea some predators won't bother showing up in the first place."
Milo Ventimiglia was hungry
The Associated Press reported that dinner was served so early ahead of the 2018 Golden Globes that poor This is Us star Milo Ventimiglia almost missed his meal, sitting down just as the salads were served. The outlet noted that the Golden Globes dinners are served and cleaned up quickly in order to have everything cleared before the ceremony begins. (And perhaps to ensure no celebs will spill soup on their attire without having time to change.)
There was a protest outside the event
A group called Hollywood Handmaids protested outside the Beverly Hilton dressed as women from A Handmaid's Tale, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The group explained on its Facebook page, "As a chapter of the Handmaid Coalition, Hollywood Handmaids stand for equity in gender and race representation, both on and off the screen, and for violence-free working conditions in the film and entertainment industry ... Hollywood Handmaids are: Directors, writers, producers, actors, extras, PAs, hair and makeup, special fx, stunts, camera, sound, costumes, props, art departments, locations, casting, editors, composers, publicists, agents, assistants, grip, electric, DPs, animation, voice over talent, craft service and catering, accounting, talent management, legal, and so many others in the film and entertainment industry."
"We have been silenced, marginalized, belittled, assaulted, excluded, and harassed, once, twice, too many times ... Today, we stand alongside our sisters and brothers wearing black on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, to demonstrate the emerging and growing resistance against violence in the workplace and society at large," the statement said.
Kerry Washington missed her tykes
People reported that Kerry Washington was spotted outside the bathrooms Facetiming with her 3-year-old daughter, Isabelle Amarachi, and 15-month old son Caleb Kelechi. Too cute!
Tom Hanks was his own waiter
Matt Damon made it date night
PDA alert! Matt Damon and wife Luciana treated the Golden Globes as a date night, People reported, with the Downsizing (2017) star even getting a bit handsy. A spy told the magazine he squeezed his wife's derriere while they walked around and posed for selfies with fans. Damon was later spotted mingling with pal and Thor: Ragnarok (2017) co-star Chris Hemsworth at an Amazon after-party.
Sterling K. Brown geeked out over Jon Snow
This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, who made history with his Golden Globes win, is a huge fan of Game of Thrones star Kit Harington. A spy told Entertainment Tonight that Brown spotted Harington near the men's room and told him, "Hey man, I'm a huge fan!" Nonplussed, Harington politely thanked him and walked away. It seems winter did not come, but a slightly chilly, if not rude, reception did.
Reese Witherspoon poked fun at Oprah
When Reese Witherspoon saw her Wrinkle in Time (2018) co-star Oprah Winfrey backstage after the talk show queen accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Witherspoon apparently went as nuts as the rest of us would. A spy told People that Witherspoon walked around roaring, "You get a Globe! You get a Globe! You get a Globe!" reminiscent of Winfrey's infamous 2004 episode in which she gave every person in her talk show audience a new Pontiac sedan.
The ladies' room line was super long
Witnesses told Entertainment Tonight that Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie waited in line for the women's restroom with everyone else and that she was super-polite and friendly, telling those around her "excuse me" and "thank you." Less patient, reportedly, was Fifty Shades Freed (2018) star Dakota Johnson, who saw how long the line was for the ladies' room and promptly made a beeline for the men's room instead. A spy claimed the guard gave her some side-eye, but let her in, and when she finished her business, she exited with Chris Hemsworth and laughed it off.
Two legends played musical chairs
Mariah Carey had such a riveting conversation on her way back from the restroom that she needed to sit down STAT before cameras began rolling again, and it turned out, she accidentally took one of the best (and possibly most honored) seats in the house. Carey tweeted, "Got caught mingling on the way to the loo during a commercial break.. took the first seat available, happens to be right next to Steven Spielberg ... Cut to next commercial break, guess who comes back to her seat ... (me) Dear Meryl, please forgive me!!! (MERYL STREEP) You can take my seat any time!" Legends only, dahling.
