Celebs With The Most Scientifically Beautiful Faces

Celebrities tend to be way more attractive than the Average Joe. The reason: well, it all may come down to science. Research shows that having a symmetrical, well-proportioned face puts you in a much stronger position to land, say, the cover of Vogue or even an Oscar. The following stars' mugs have become the subject of intense aesthetic study over the years, and here are the results.

James Franco

In 2008, a group of Israeli scientists developed a "beautification engine" that used a mathematical formula to theoretically make photographs of people appear more attractive. At one point during the study, the scientists reportedly ran a photo of James Franco through their computer program. His face barely changed at all. As The New York Times aptly put it, the result suggested that Franco's "classically handsome face is already pretty perfect." No arguments here.

Brad Pitt

In 2013, Dr. Kendra Schmid developed a formula that measured a person's attractiveness based on 29 different points of the face, with symmetry, proportion and ratio playing a key role in Schmid's 1-10 scale. According to The Huffington Post, Schmid's formula determined that actor Brad Pitt has an almost perfect-looking face. The actor earned an astounding 9.67 out of a possible 10 points, which, duh. Close behind Pitt on Schmid's scale were actors Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, and Ben Affleck, who earned 7.31, 6.77, and 6.55 points, respectively.

Lena Dunham

Also featured on Schmid's scale: Girls actress Lena Dunham, whose physical appeal has been heavily debated since her series premiered on HBO in 2012. Dunham earned a 6.82 on the scale, ranking higher mathematically than the likes of Jennifer Lopez (People magazine's "World's Most Beautiful Woman" in 2011) and Jessica Biel (Esquire "Sexiest Woman Alive" in 2005.) In fact, Dunham was only .31 points behind Brad Pitt's ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, who earned a score of 7.13 and was voted "Worlds Most Beautiful Woman" by Vanity Fair readers in 2006. Looks like math just became Dunham's new favorite subject.

Miley Cyrus

Another leading lady Schmid's study favored: Miley Cyrus. The former Hannah Montana star earned a 7.36 out of 10. That puts her head and shoulders above some of Hollywood's most popular pop stars, including Beyoncé, who earned 7.28 on Schmid's scale, despite being voted "Hottest Woman of the 21st Century" by GQ.

Did anybody edge out Cyrus? That would be Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton, who scored a 7.46.

David Gandy

In 2015, computer scientist Dr. Chris Solomon conducted a two-month study using software to determine which factors make a man and a woman's face most beautiful, according to British people. Solomon subsequently applied the results of his study to the beautiful faces of Hollywood and determined that British supermodel David Gandy had the most beautiful face among male celeb.

Chris Hemsworth

Coming in second place on Dr. Solomon's scale: Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth, which is a big "duh" for anyone who's seen the Thor movies. Incidentally, Hemsworth was also voted the Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine in 2014. Which, again...duh!

Bradley Cooper

Right behind Hemsworth in the Solomon study was another one of People's sexiest men alive: Bradley Cooper graced the magazine's cover in 2011. Of course, his good looks and talent have continued to grow over the years–so much so that those baby blues were declared to be Hollywood's "sexiest eyes" by People in 2017.

Justin Bieber

Perhaps all those teenage girls were on to something because pop star and notorious troublemaker Justin Bieber placed sixth in Solomon's study. Older folks may roll their eyes, but at least on-again-off-again gal pal Selena Gomez probably feels justified.

Zac Efron

He's transformed his image from that pretty boy in the High School Musical movies to an overwhelmingly muscular leading man, so it makes total sense that Zac Efron made Solomon's list. He ranked eighth, which is two spots behind the aforementioned Bieber, which is... all right, we really need to let that one go.

Natalie Portman

Solomon also applied his studies to female celebrities, and guess who came out on top? Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman. A-listers Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Swift ranked second and third, respectively.

Amber Heard

Apparently, scientists are celeb-obsessed nerds, just like the rest of us. Case in point: in 2016, Dr. Julian De Silva conducted a study using the ancient Greek formula of Phi to determine that Johnny Depp's ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, had the world's most beautiful face.

"[Heard's] eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, chin, jaw and facial shape were measured and 12 key marker points were analyzed and found to be 91.85 percent of the Greek ratio of Phi, which is 1.618," the study said (via Us Weekly.)

Kim Kardashian

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian ranked second in De Silva's study of the most beautiful faces. Incidentally, she also ranked first on his list of the most beautiful eyebrows.

"Kim Kardashian's eyebrows are crafted to perfection," De Silva said (via Us Weekly.) "There were two calculations performed...length of eyebrow from tip to tip divided by length from tip to arch."

Emily Ratajkowski

According to De Silva, model Emily Ratajkowski has the fourth most beautiful face in the world, as well as the third most beautiful nose and fourth most beautiful chin, but where she really shines, according to this scientist, is in the lip department. Per Us Weekly, the British-born model scored a 96.7 percent for her pout.

Insert your "by a nose" pun, here.

Scarlett Johansson

Have you ever seen a movie starring Scarlett Johansson and found yourself transfixed by her gaze? There's a reason for that. According to De Silva, the Avengers beauty has the very best eyes in the business, scoring a whopping 95.95 percent.

"The distance between the eyes, divided by the length of the eye should equal 1.618," he said (via Us Weekly.) "The distance from the nose to the edge of the eye, divided by the distance from the edge of the eye to the corner of the lips should equal 1.618."

Kate Moss

Kate Moss has been a supermodel for decades, and De Silva obviously took notice, ranking her third on his list of the most scientifically perfect faces.

Her strongest features? The Calvin Klein icon's eyes and eyebrows earned scores of 95.75 percent and 87.63 percent, respectively–that's science-speak for "she's a pretty lady."

Kendall Jenner

Model Kendell Jenner was just 20 years old when she placed fifth overall on De Silva's list of the most beautiful faces in 2016.

Beauty like that is almost enough to make us forget about Jenner's infamous Pepsi ad. Wait–we said almost, right?
