The Creepiest Celebrity Ghost Stories

Some actors provide haunting performances on the screen or stage. Others are just haunted. These celebrities swear these ghost stories aren't the result of Hollywood tricks, but of real-life spirit encounters. Get ready to get spooked.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is "Confident" that ghosts exist. She told BuzzFeed, "My house in Texas is so ridiculously haunted. Not by a bad spirit, but a little girl. I think her name is Emily. I've had a medium come over and ghost hunters, and they both told me the same name, Emily." She also told Ellen DeGeneres that when she and her sister were young, they'd talk to a girl in the closet...named Emily.

Matthew McConaughey

Guess this ghost was a fan of bongos: Matthew McConaughey was haunted by what he deemed a friendly blue mist that he named Madame Blue. "She's a cool ghost," he said. "Maybe me being nude all the time is why we get along." Can't say we'd complain about that either.

Cher

It's been said that after the apocalypse, all that will be left are cockroaches and Cher. And maybe the ghost of Cher's ex-husband, Sonny Bono. The singer and actor passed away after a skiing accident in 1998, but the "Believe" chanteuse says he's still with her. In a Reddit AMA, she claimed, "I actually think Sonny makes a light go on. I have a beautiful chandelier that he makes the light go on when it's impossible, when there's no power on." She added, "I love ghosts. I prefer ghosts to some people."

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling says they moved out of his childhood Ontario, Canada, home after his mother was convinced it was haunted—and Gosling was the first to encounter whatever ghastly spirit inhabited the place. "He just sat. And I knew from a very young age that he was a ghost, too. He scared me. I told my mother, but she couldn't see him. Nobody could. And I learned to live with that. I had to." Somewhat thankfully, soon Gosling knew he wasn't crazy. He continues, "Then, a few years later, [my mother] thought she saw him, then almost right away my cousin saw him, and then my uncle. And we were outta there in fairly short order." Interestingly enough, Gosling now claims to not believe in ghosts.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga claimed to be haunted by spirit named Ryan. A member of her touring crew told The Daily Star, "She's been telling us all for months that she has a spirit named Ryan who travels the world with her. She's been pretty terrified by this spirit, but more than anything he's annoying her as he won't leave her alone. He hasn't done anything too violent or scary, but she's terrified by his presence."

It wasn't the only time Mother Monster was freaked out by ghosts. Previous reports claimed that she actually hired ghost-busting teams to eliminate spirits from the O2 Arena in London before she'd perform there.

Keanu Reeves

Why haven't they made a meme of this yet? Keanu Reeves was a young boy in New Jersey when he saw a ghost. "I remember just staring at this suit, which had no body or legs in it as it came into the room before disappearing," he said. "It was a double-breasted suit in white, and I looked at my nanny, who was just as shocked as me. I just couldn't get back to sleep afterwards, and I still see the figure in my dreams and nightmares."

Miley Cyrus

Finally, something more terrifying about Miley Cyrus than her tongue or attempts at twerking. The "Wrecking Ball" singer told Elle UK that she ditched an apartment in London during her 2009 European tour because of things that went bump in the night.

"One night, my little sister was standing in the shower, and all of a sudden, I hear her scream," Cyrus says. "I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot, but it was still ... it wasn't like the water had just changed, the knob had turned, but she hadn't turned it and it was burning her. She was really red."

It didn't end there for the shower-spirit, either. "I thought I had seen a little boy sitting on the sink watching me take a shower so I felt really freaked out," she said. "I was sitting there the next night and maybe I'm crazy, but I could have sworn I could see this little boy sitting there on the sink kicking his feet."

Sir Patrick Stewart

Leave it to Sir Patrick Stewart to see a ghost and stay completely composed and professional. The Blunt Talk star told The Telegraph that he saw a ghost backstage during a performance of Waiting for Godot in London at the notoriously haunted Royal Haymarket Theatre. He later told his co-star and BFF Sir Ian McKellen, "I just saw a ghost. On stage, during act one." The ghost is believed to be the spirit of John Baldwin Buckstone, an actor and manager of the theatre in the 1800s.

Taylor Momsen

Taylor Momsen swears she photographed a ghost. The Pretty Reckless singer told People, "My mom grew up in Devil's Lake, N.D., and her next door neighbor died. I went ghost hunting and took pictures and talked to her and all this stuff. And there are actually two images that I took, one of a hand on a typewriter and one of her entire body in a window."

Peter Jackson

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and his wife both saw the exact same ghost separately and were able to describe the specter to one another: a screaming, angry woman who approached them, then disappeared into a wall. We're guessing the ghost was just annoyed at how bad their King Kong reboot turned out.

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson has seen some frightening and some friendly spirits in her time. In the DVD extras of her film The Skeleton Key, Hudson revealed, "I've seen a ghost of a woman with no face, and that was really creepy. Another time, my grandmother came to me, and I woke up and felt amazing that she was around me."

Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger's daughter Elizabeth told Contact Music that her father's property has inadvertently given shelter to ghosts. "My dad's house in France was raided during the French Revolution, and all the residents were buried in the garden," she dished. "My sister Georgia saw a ghost when she was four, and my brother Gabriel keeps talking to a ghost now."

Kesha

Out of all the celebs on this list, Kesha has had some of the most, er, sensual encounters with the supernatural. The "Die Young" singer claimed to have actually had sex with a ghost, admitting, "I didn't know his name! He was a ghost! I'm very open to it." She also claimed to have had ghosts haunting her lady-bits. On an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, she explained, "I was told I had dead people living in me, I called my hypnotherapist. She said I had to exorcise my body," she giggled. "And then I got a ghost meter and it just beeped at my vagina. It seemed to be accurate because I was going through a dry spell, and it was like, beeping around, and it all makes sense now."

Dan Aykroyd

Dan Aykroyd ain't afraid of no ghost. The Ghostbusters star says that his home is haunted by former resident Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas, as well as by a man who died on the property. But the hauntings don't bug him—not even when doors open and close on their own and items slide across his countertops with no explanation. He told Esquire that he actually spooned with the man's ghost, joking, "I'd be surprised if I was his type, but when you're dead, you'll take what you can get."

Michelle Williams

This tale is more tear-jerking than terrifying. Michelle Williams claims to have been visited twice by the spirit of her late boyfriend, Heath Ledger. She claims to have woken up once at 3 a.m. in her apartment to a shadowy figure of the actor moving furniture around her room. The second time, Williams says Ledger's spirit apologized for not being able to help raise their daughter, Matilda.
