Mariah Carey's Breakup With Bryan Tanaka - 5 Facts You May Not Know

Mariah Carey is a single woman yet again. In April 2017, she and boyfriend Bryan Tanaka called it quits. But just who was the man she loved? And why did they decide to split?

Who is Bryan Tanaka?

Before he dated Carey, you probably never heard of Tanaka, and there's a good reason for that: he's a backup dancer. Rather than steal the spotlight with insane vocals like his former beau, Tanaka made it his job to dance behind the headliner. According to The Sun, after touring with Beyoncé, Tanaka joined forces with Carey for her Adventures of Mimi tour back in 2006. In 2016, Tanaka became Carey's creative director.

How did they meet?

While they may have met in 2006, Carey and Tanaka didn't start dating until 10 years later. Before their romance, Carey had been married to Nick Cannon, with whom she has two children–Monroe and Moroccan–and had been engaged to billionaire James Packer. However, after Packer ended their engagement in 2016, the same year her divorce to Cannon was finalized, Carey cozied up to Tanaka. Carey and Tanaka's growing intimacy was documented on her short-lived reality show, Mariah's World (2016-17).

How long were they together?

The pair only dated for about five months—though they made plenty of headlines during that time. Carey and Tanaka were repeatedly seen packing on the PDA. After Carey split from her fiancé, she and Tanaka put on quite the show at the launch party for her new breakup song, "I Don't," where the dancer dipped Carey for the photographers. In Dec. 2016, they were spotted together on a beach in Hawaii, kissing and playing in the water. And, of course, the pair shared everything about their relationship on social media, including makeout sessions and Valentine's Day plans.

Why did they break up?

According to TMZ, Carey and Tanaka broke up due to the dancer's "insane jealousy" of her close relationship with her ex-husband Cannon, with whom, along with their children, Carey attended the Kids' Choice Awards. Entertainment Tonight reported that their big breakup was sparked by a fight on St. Patrick's Day, when Tanaka, angry that Carey admitted to a waiter that she was still close with Cannon, openly flirted with another women in an attempt to make the "Heartbreaker" singer upset.

It's also reported that Carey felt that Tanaka took advantage of her wealth, as he allegedly used her money to buy expensive clothes and jewelry. One source told ET that Tanaka was dating Carey to jump-start his music career, hoping to collaborate with her on a track.

How has Nick Cannon responded?

So with both Carey and Tanaka staying quiet on their breakup—at least, for now—one question remains: what does Cannon think about his ex-wife's recent split?

"I know nothing about this," Cannon told ET on April 10, 2017. "I got too many of my own relationship issues to be worried about an old relationship."

Regarding Tanaka's reported jealousy of him, the former America's Got Talent host quipped, "Most men are jealous of me."

He continued, "I'm joking. But I know nothing about it. For me, at the end of the day, she's an amazing mother and we focus on our kids. That's never going to change no matter who's in my life or who's in her life. We have kids together, so we'll always be family."
