Actors You Wouldn't Believe Smoke In Real Life

The stats on smoking have been in for years — it's bad for pretty much every part of your body. With Hollywood being the home of the juice cleanse, and actors and actresses constantly sounding off on their healthy habits, it's still somewhat surprising that a number of them just can't kick the habit.

Despite all that we know about smoking's toll on the body, some actors and actresses keep on puffing away. Check out who in Hollywood is still lighting up.

Hayden Panettiere

Petite actress Hayden Panettiere is probably best recognized for her roles on Nashville and Heroes; she's also been photographed a number of times puffing away on cigarettes. Most recently, she was spotted smoking after doing a stint in rehab for postpartum depression.

Prior to heading to treatment, she tweeted to her fans: "Rather than stay stuck due to unhealthy coping mechanisms I have chosen to take time to reflect holistically on my health and life." Ultimately the plan didn't involve kicking the cigarette habit, but, one thing at a time.

Keira Knightley

From the sounds of it, Keira Knightley's smoking habit started close to home.

Female First UK revealed that the actress's mother encouraged her to pick up cigarettes, with Knightley saying, "My mother and I would always talk about sex. She'd come up to my room and have me roll cigarettes for her and then tell me I had to have one with her." She's been photographed smoking both while filming, and during downtime.

Kate Winslet

Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet has been fairly open about her smoking habit, telling Vanity Fair that she rolls her own cigarettes and started up on the set of Sense and Sensibility

She went on, "I don't smoke around my kids... Like that makes it any better that I smoke at all, because obviously it doesn't. But I don't smoke in the house. I mean, I had a cigarette this morning, which is because I hadn't been. Coffee and a cigarette: bingo!"

Elijah Wood

It seems that child actors can be especially vulnerable to the trappings of fame, but Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood told Salon in 2015 that he doesn't have any vices; just smoking. "That's my greatest vice," he explained.

However, Wood shared with The Black List in 2011 that, as a smoker, it really gets his gourd when people won't allow outside smoking, writing about his dislike for "Anti-smoking laws that now extend to outdoor spaces. Can we not let the use of free air be determined by the people using it? Should someone have a problem with roving smoke, they could simply ask the offending smoker if he or she would kindly refrain. Most spaces are smoke-free, and I accept that—particularly inside restaurants—but can smokers not have patios and general outdoor areas?"

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Considering Michael Douglas' famous and well-documented battle with throat cancer, it's somewhat surprising that his wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, would continue to smoke.

But, puff away she does, despite her husband's reported entreaties to quit

Daniel Radcliffe

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe not only enjoys his cigarettes, but considers himself somewhat of a tobacco connoisseur. The Los Angeles Times reported that the actor told Esquire that he had to ship his rolling tobacco from England, explaining, "I have to ship this in from home because you can't get good rolling tobacco here. It's all dry and crappy like you've emptied out a cigarette."

According to an interview with The Sun, Radcliffe finds it funny to shock unsuspecting strangers with his unlikely habit, saying "I get a kick out of asking people for a light — I'm always losing lighters. They fumble in their pockets, look up and realise [sic] they've committed the crime of giving Harry Potter cancer."

Hilarious, we guess.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Despite basically dominating the world of "healthy" living, Goop-founder and actress Gwyneth Paltrow still enjoys a sneaky cig every now and then.

As she explained in a 2013 Harper's Bazaar cover story, Paltrow admits that her vice is "My one light American Spirit that I smoke once a week, on Saturday night."

Along with juiced kale and yoni crystals, everything in moderation.

Kit Harington

Not only does Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington smoke regularly, but his habit sparked some major show spoilers in 2015.

Harington was photographed hanging out and sharing a smoke with GOT cast members in Belfast, heightening the buzz around rumors that his recently-murdered character Jon Snow was in fact not dead.

Elisabeth Moss

Emmy-award winner Elisabeth Moss has been spotted most recently taking cigarette breaks during filming of Top of the Lake

However, Vulture reported in a 2014 profile that the actress is less than fond of being photographed smoking, and "asks photographers not to take pictures of her while she's smoking."

Katie Holmes

In the past few years, actress Katie Holmes has been regularly photographed smoking both off and on set.

According to The National Enquirer (via Celebitchy), the actress has had a difficult time quitting due to stress (and with the crazy amount of attention around her split from Tom Cruise and her relationship with Jamie Foxx, we honestly kind of get it!).

Jessica Alba

Like Gwyneth Paltrow, actress Jessica Alba has made a name for herself in the "healthy-living" market as cofounder of The Honest Company, which sells "ethical" household products, and is also an avid fitness fan

And, like Gwyneth, Alba also enjoys a regular cigarette, with The Sun reporting that her habit may be linked to trying to keep her weight down.

Dakota Johnson

During the 2017 Met Gala, despite NYC smoking laws, a number of celebs posted smoke break selfies from the museum's bathroom (prompting a bunch of media criticism for glamorizing the unhealthy habit). 50 Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson was one of the stars who showed up on Rita Ora's snapchat enjoying a smoke.

It turns out that her habit goes way back; in 2006, her mom, actress Melanie Griffith, was spotted lighting up the then-17 year old's cigarette for her.
