Celebs That Completely Trashed Hotel Rooms

Johnny Depp is one of the most famous actors in the world, but when this incident happened in 1994, he was just starting to make a big splash in films such Edward Scissorhands and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. A month before Depp's titular turn in Ed Wood opened in theaters, he was arrested at The Mark hotel in New York City. According to People, Depp "used his fists and combat-boot-clad feet to smash a glass coffee-table top, a lamp stand, a china pot and some antique picture frames in his more-than-$l,200-a-night suite." Depp's lawyer suggested that the actor was frustrated because his usual NYC hotel, the Carlyle, had no availability. Others suggested he was having a lovers' quarrel with model Kate Moss. 

People also interviewed neighboring guest Roger Daltry, formerly of The Who, who bragged about his rock band being better at trashing hotel rooms than Depp. "It took him so bloody long," Daltry said. "The Who could have done the job in one minute flat." Depp later claimed he was trying to kill a cockroach, but in 2009, he finally came clean to Esquire about his shady past: "I was in a bad mood and I assaulted a hotel room. I broke a lot of stuff and it felt good. I felt better afterwards. I can't say that I would recommend it, but you just do what you have to do in the moment that you have to do it."

Now renamed and remodeled, the Andaz West Hollywood is a respectable destination, but back when it was known as the Hyatt House, folks called it the "Riot House" because of all the rock stars who left their mark there. The Rolling Stones guitarist, singer, and songwriter Keith Richards is among the hotel's legendary guests. Filmmaker Robert Frank captured Richards throwing the television off the balcony of room 1015 in his 1972 documentary C***sucker Blues. Let's just hope he got some "Satisfaction" out of that stunt. (Sorry, we couldn't resist.) Needless to say, the hotel enclosed all its balconies in glass in 2008. 

The Stones frontman Mick Jagger mocked the band's bad reputation in 2012, when he recited late night host David Letterman's "Top 10 Things I, Mick Jagger, Have Learned After 50 Years in Rock n' Roll." One noteworthy item: "Be considerate of other hotel guests — trash your room by 10 p.m."

The Holiday Inn hotel chain reportedly banned Rod Stewart for throwing wild parties with too many girls in his room while touring with Faces in the '80s. Stewart hasn't denied it. In fact, he detailed his antics years later, per the Mirror: "We'd empty rooms, stick furniture in the lift and send it to the lobby." Why go to all that trouble trashing the place? "It seems foolish now, but we did it because, especially in the Holiday Inns, we'd get no respect," Stewart said. "They didn't want to serve us so we took our revenge."

They say time heals all wounds, and that seems to be the case between Stewart and the hotel chain. After Stewart talked about the ban on The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Holiday Inn tweeted: "We're not one to hold a grudge. You're welcome back any time." The rocker reportedly took them up on that and stayed in Holiday Inns during his 2016 U.K. tour. However, he couldn't resist teasing the hotel on Twitter: "Careful what you wish for. After parties @holidayinn on tour this summer."

Rocker Kurt Cobain's widow experienced her own wild rock star days as frontwoman for Hole, and in 2009, she reportedly trashed a fancy hotel room at The Inn on Irving Place. According to a Page Six insider, "She caused so much damage in eight hours and wreaked so much havoc. It was actually kind of funny ... minus the $5,000 in repairs." What was some of the damage? "Dirty needles and used feminine hygiene products [left] behind." We don't know about you, but that... doesn't sound all that hilarious to us.

Not to mention, Love's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was reportedly with her mom during that infamous stay. In 2019, Frances Bean, who is also pursuing music, joined RuPaul's What's the Tee podcast to discuss her relationship with her mom. She said Love is "so deeply empathetic and so intelligent" that it's difficult for her mom to "sit with herself," noting that Love is "highly self-destructive as a result of not knowing what to do with all that information and feeling."

The late Amy Winehouse sang openly about her addictions and tragically died from fatal levels of alcohol in her blood in 2011. One of the "Rehab" singer's most infamous hotel room trashings occurred in 2008, following one of her stints in a treatment facility. Winehouse reportedly stayed at the Park Plaza London Riverbank hotel for about two weeks, but that was two weeks too long, according to hotel sources who described the "carnage." 

According to Marie Claire, she refused to let cleaners do their jobs during her stay, and when she finally checked out, the scene was less than ideal. "The bed hadn't been changed since she arrived and most of the room had been used as an ashtray," a source claimed."There was dirty underwear everywhere and the place smelt incredibly stale. She had taken a mirror off the wall and laid it on the floor. One can only guess what for. The bath had to be scrubbed and unblocked from balls of matted hair."

In 2009, Winehouse allegedly smeared the walls of her hotel room with spaghetti and tore up some carpet prior to the MTV Europe Music Awards. Rapper Snoop Dogg supposedly witnessed the whole thing. "Snoop was just standing there open-mouthed," a source told MTV News. "He couldn't believe what he was seeing." 

Amanda Bynes was another promising talent whose personal challenges got in the way of her acting career. The star of Nickelodeon's The Amanda Show and All That, Bynes had a gift for characters and voices, which she put to good use in movies such as What a Girl Wants, She's the Man and Hairspray. The actress stopped acting around 2010, but in 2013, she made headlines for getting kicked out of the Ritz-Carlton in New York City for allegedly smoking marijuana in her room. Bynes denied the allegations, but TMZ obtained pictures of the trashy scene, which reportedly included "piles of garbage, ashes, cosmetics, and even a destroyed smoke alarm." The tab said Bynes "ran up a $9,000 bill over 9 days" and that was before the hotel finished tallying up the damages.

On the bright side: Bynes appears to have put those dark days behind her. By 2018, she was sober, studying fashion at FIDM, and prepared to discuss her controversial past with Paper magazine. "The mixture of marijuana and whatever other drugs and sometimes drinking really messed up my brain. It really made me a completely different person," she said. "I actually am a nice person. I would never feel, say or do any of the things that I did and said to the people I hurt."

Lindsay Lohan was on top of Hollywood from about 1998 to 2005. Her dual role in The Parent Trap made her a young box office behemoth, and she went on to star hits such as Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, but her party-girl image and a slew of legal troubles eventually overshadowed her professional life. In 2013, the struggling starlet showed up in Scary Movie V, which is not exactly a benchmark of cinematic success. The year before that saw her headlining the misguided prestige projects The Canyons and Liz & Dick. In the midst of it all, Lohan apparently didn't even know that she'd been banned by the Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, Calif. 

According to TMZ, Lohan and her mom tried to check in late one night in 2013 and were "unceremoniously turned away" because the actress had been put "on a blacklist after she allegedly trashed one of their rooms in 2007." CBS Los Angeles reported that "the cleaning crew discovered the room littered with cigarette butts, dirty towels and trash, then claimed a bloody syringe was found." Earlier that same year, the famed W hotel in New York City reportedly banned Lohan for allegedly causing $50,000 in damage to a single room. A source told Us Weekly, "Her suite had so many cigarette burns, they had to change all the carpets."
