CHRIS ROCK CASUALLY BURNED WILL SMITH IN HIS LATEST COMEDY SHOW
By KATHRYN COOK, FRANCES DEAN
At the 2022 Oscars, Chris Rock appeared on stage to present an award and cracked a few jokes, including one about Jada Pinkett Smith's "G.I. Jane" haircut. Post-joke, Jada’s husband Will stormed the stage, slapped Rock, and shouted at Rock to keep his wife's name out of his mouth.
Slowly but surely, Chris Rock is opening up about the Oscars incident. During his first comedy show after #SlapGate, Rock told the audience that he was still processing what happened to him, and he would talk and joke about it in detail once he's ready.
However, Rock did crack a joke "about how Atlantic City is too close to Philly for him to get into it," an insider at the show revealed. Will Smith, and his fictionalized self on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," are notably from “West Philadelphia, born and raised.”
Smith's career is in uncharted territory after the Academy Awards. Though Smith is certainly not the first actor to face national controversy, and he and Rock likely wish they could put the drama to bed, Smith will likely have to field questions and navigate commentary about the issue for months to come.
