DAVID HARBOUR GETS CANDID ABOUT HIS TRANSFORMATION FOR STRANGER THINGS
By LILLIAN GAO
"Stranger Things" star David Harbour is no stranger to gaining weight for a role. In 2021, he told the New York Times that he reached 280 pounds to play a supersoldier in Marvel's "Black Widow," on top of the weight he had already gained to play Jim Hopper. However, for Season 4 of the Netflix hit, Harbour did quite the opposite to prepare for filming.
Having been imprisoned in Russia for a year by the time "Stranger Things 4" begins, the new lean, mean Jim Hopper has lost most of the weight he gained over the past three seasons. On a July 4 episode of "BBC Breakfast," Harbour said, "At the end of season three I was about 270 pounds and then when we came into this season I was 190."
When asked how he lost such a steep amount of weight, Harbour joked, "It's a lot of [...] being hungry." Regardless of what he's required to do for a role, Harbour has advocated for body positivity as the poster man for the "dad bod," and once told People, "I love the idea of real bodies on television [...] [I want] people to feel good in their bodies."
