DENZEL WASHINGTON BREAKS SILENCE ON THE WILL SMITH CONTROVERSY
By JOANNA MAZEWSKI and EMILY HUTCHINSON
Denzel Washington says that he's doing the one thing that he can following Will Smith's Oscars slap against Chris Rock: He's praying about it. The "Tragedy of Macbeth" star claimed that "for whatever reason, the devil got ahold" of his friend Will that night.
After consoling Smith at the Oscars, Washington says he's not the kind of person to just sit there and let a moment like that unfold, and he’s been praying ever since. "Who are we to condemn?" he said. I don't know all the ins and outs of this situation, but I know the only solution was prayer, the way I saw it".
This wasn't the first time that Washington offered Smith some sound advice. In an interview with People a month before the Oscars, Smith said that he's always appreciated Washington lifting him up during times in need.
Smith has apologized for the incident, sharing his regret during his Best Actor acceptance speech, and says he was "heartbroken" upon his resignation from the Academy on April 1. The Academy is set to discuss matters further at their next board meeting on April 18.
