GRAMMY VIEWERS WEREN'T EXPECTING TREVOR NOAH'S WILL SMITH JOKE
By AMANDA RAY BYERLY, EMILY HUTCHINSON
Comedian and host Trevor Noah hit the ground running during his opening monologue at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, cracking jokes left and right, including one about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. "Welcome everybody to the 64th annual Grammy awards. We made it, people," Noah began.
"Don't even think of it as an awards show," Noah instructed. "It's a concert where we are giving out awards, we will be listening to music, dancing, singing, keeping people's names out of our mouths," he said, referring to Chris Rock’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith that caused the Oscars debacle.
As one can imagine, following Noah's nod to Smith and Rock, Twitter lit up like the night sky on the Fourth of July. One user wrote "LMAO yo why trevor noah kick off the grammy's with 'and we're gonna keep people's names out of our mouth/ #TheGrammys".
Musician Questlove had a similar sentiment, tweeting "Can we FINNNNNNNALY stop talking about it?" [...] Remain in your seats and keep your hands to yourself. Alright?" Nate Bargatze strolled onto the Grammys stage in a helmet, joking "They said comedians have to wear these now at award shows during their joke parts."
It's unclear what kind of punishments will befall Will Smith, though he resigned from the Academy on April 1 amid disciplinary proceedings. "We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith's immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," Academy president David Rubin stated.
