HOW DID EMILY RATAJKOWSKI GET DISCOVERED?
By NICOLE CORD-CRUZ
Model Emily Ratajkowski was once best known for starring in Robin Thicke and Pharrell's controversial "Blurred Lines" music video, but she's gone beyond that dubious honor to become an accomplished actor and best-selling author. As you may guess, Ratajkowski's career trajectory has been quite complicated.
Ratajkowski told Editorialist that when she was a child, all she wanted to do was act: "I was obsessed with 'Cats' and would put on shows for my parents when I was five years old." At age 14, her acting coach urged her to get signed to a modeling agency, and while her mother was opposed, Ratajkowski did it to advance her acting career.
However, Ratajkowski soon gave up on television because she had been typecasted as "the bitchy girl in high school". She was apprehensive of the "Blurred Lines" offer, saying "I didn't want to get pigeonholed into doing music videos," but felt differently after meeting with director Diane Martell; thus, Ratajkowski's career was launched.
Today, Ratajkowski wants to be known for more than her appearance. Her essay collection "My Body" explores her relationship with female sexuality and turning its drawbacks into empowerment, and she wrote on Instagram in 2020, "I have discovered the parts of me that are so much more important than 'sexiness.'"
