Inside Kirstie Alley's Involvement In Scientology

By AMY LAMARE

Kirstie Alley is well-known for her role on “Cheers,” but she’s also infamous for her involvement with Scientology. Alley was struggling with a cocaine addiction at age 28 when she took part in the Church’s “Narconon” drug treatment program, which she claims ended her addiction.

Alley has remained a Scientologist since then, and she has reached a level within the Church called “Operating Thetan Level 7,” which allegedly means Alley can “handle things” without using her body or physical means. This level of devotion has damaged Alley’s relationships and reputation.

Alley has disparaged the claims of former Scientologist Leah Remini, who is vocal about the abuse she suffered during her time in the religion. When Remini filed a missing person's report for Church leader David Miscavige's wife Shelly, who hasn’t been seen in 15 years, Alley called the move a P.R. stunt.

Alley also burned bridges with her "Dancing With the Stars" partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, because he hung out with Jennifer Lopez, a friend of Leah Remini’s. Chmerkovskiy pointed out that Scientology’s policy demands that members distance themselves from "suppressive" people.
