LIZZO FINDS HERSELF IN HOT WATER OVER LYRICS IN HER LATEST SINGLE
By FABIO MAGNOCAVALLO
Lizzo's upcoming album "Special," due for a July 15, 2022 release, has already garnered a lot of hype and success. The singer's lead single "About Damn Time" was a hit and peaked at No. 4 on the U.S. Hot 100, and Lizzo has teased her new album again with another song titled "Grrrls" — but fans aren't as happy this time around.
In the first verse of "Grrrls," Lizzo raps, "Do you see this s***? / I'mma spaz." "Spaz" is a slur referring to disabled people, and disability advocate Hannah Diviney tweeted, "Hey @lizzo my disability Cerebral Palsy is literally classified as Spastic Diplegia [...] your new song makes me pretty angry + sad. 'Spaz' doesn't mean freaked out or crazy."
Another fan wrote, "Hey @lizzo please remove the word 'spaz' from your new song because it's a slur and really offensive to the disabled community". Lizzo eventually did just that, changing the lyric to Do you see this s***? / Hold me back." She made it clear on Twitter that her intentions weren't ever to "promote derogatory language."
