The Bizarre Avril Lavigne Conspiracy Theory Explained

Celebrity - News

By FABIO MAGNOCAVALLO

Avril Lavigne’s persona of a pop punk princess may be loud and eye-catching, but the singer has kept her personal life private. This had led some to believe in a bizarre conspiracy theory about her.

Avril was only 16 when she signed her first record deal, and in 2005, a fan page alleged that the young Lavigne struggled with her fame, so she often used a body double named Melissa. While this is already a bit baseless and odd, the theory gets crazier.

According to the theory, the “real” Avril Lavigne died in 2003, and her record label replaced her with her body double to make the public believe nothing had happened to the teen rockstar. This theory resurfaced in 2017 and resulted in a huge discussion (and plenty of jokes) on social media.

So why do some people believe this theory? Well, Avril once posed with the name “Melissa” written on her hand, and since Avril has matured throughout the years, some fans think that her changing looks mean she was replaced by another person (rather than, y’know, aging doing its thing).

Lavigne spoke about the theory in 2018 and 2019, calling it “so weird” and a “dumb internet rumor.” She’s “flabbergasted” that some believe she’s actually a fake, and as talked-about as the conspiracy theory is, we imagine most people agree with Avril.
