In December 2019, a source told People that Justin Hartley's burgeoning career — which was skyrocketed by "This Is Us" — was likely responsible for his change of heart about married life. "He's reached a new level of fame thanks to the show and he doesn't want to close many doors right now," the insider alleged.

According to another source cited by People, "[Chrishell Statuse] thought babies would happen soon after they got married, but it just hasn't worked out." Another insider elaborated to the publication, "Chrishell is really ready to just settle down and be a wife and stay-at-home mom," so she may have been at odds with Hartley.

A source told People that even though the couple appeared very happy, they had "been having trouble for a while." However, another insider suggested that Stause was blindsided: "Yes, they'd had some problems, but she certainly never thought he would just go and suddenly file for divorce, and not even try to save things."
