Story of

Woody

Harrelson

By BRIAN YOST

WILD NIGHT IN LONDON

For any actor, getting your first big break is a massive deal, and when Woody Harrelson landed a role on “Cheers,” he went to a party he'll never forget. He ended up in an ill-advised foursome and his future wife Laura Louie found out through tabloids, which "led to a good bit of groveling on Harrelson's part," as Rolling Stone said.

VIOLENT UPBRINGING

Harrelson has said that he was a lot to handle as a kid, especially when his father left him, leading to insecurity that caused Woody to act out. In first grade, he was accused of stealing a purse, leading him to break several windows with his fist, and has admitted to having "tantrums" even into his adulthood.

Woody's father Charles Harrelson, a contract killer, was sentenced to two life terms for the slaying of a federal judge in San Antonio. Charles passed away in prison in 2007, and in an interview with The Guardian, the only positive thing Woody shared about his dad was his advice to "always keep an open mind."

STARDOM TOOK A TOLL

Harrelson has admitted that while he’s always excited to film new movies, he would like to spend some more time at home with his family. He has three daughters with Laura Louie, and the actor told NPR, "[...] I will have been home one week in a year, in the past year [...] So, yeah, it's just not fair to my family."

RELATIONSHIP CUT SHORT

Harrelson was once running late and passed on an opportunity to visit his great grandmother Polly, who died shortly afterwards. He said, "I wish I'd written down her stories because there were some great stories and she knew all this stuff about her mom and her mom's mom and now that's all gone."
