Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are Hollywood royalty, with a relationship spanning two decades and plenty of media coverage since the start. Though they’ve faced challenges and tabloid rumors, the couple has been married since 1997, and the story of how they met is pretty compelling.

Will has said he was first drawn to his wife while watching her on “A Different World,” and they met at a friend’s party years later. He said of their meeting, “We had that moment and we connected, but I was married” — to actor Sheree Zampino, whom Will divorced in 1995 — but he and Jada would meet again.

In 1994, Jada auditioned for the part of Will’s girlfriend on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” and after he and Zampino divorced, Jada moved to Los Angeles to be with Will. Jada adds some humor when she tells this story, nothing that she lost the “Fresh Prince” role, and when Will tried to talk to her, she was still upset and blew him off.

In addition to the cold shoulder, Jada also used to have cold feet: she never felt ready to marry Will every time he brought it up.
