Ami’s cancer diagnosis

Ami Brown was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in April 2017, but was cancer-free by January 2018; however, rumors arose that she fabricated her diagnosis. "I called it on Twitter that Ami wouldn't die cuz she never had cancer," one person tweeted, leading Ami's doctors to confirm her medical records.

Billy's health scare

Billy Brown, the patriarch of the show, often comes across as tough and invincible, so it was a little unnerving for his family when, in October 2018, he suffered a health scare. Representatives for Discovery, "Alaskan Bush People's" home channel, confirmed that an upper respiratory infection landed Billy in the hospital.

Ami's sad estrangement

During Ami Brown's battle with cancer, she lost her own mother, Earlene Branson, and this was especially difficult for Ami because the two were estranged from one another and lost their chance to make amends. Ami's brother, Les Branson, blamed the rift on his sister's husband, Billy Brown.

Matt's addiction battle

Matt Brown, the eldest child of the family, entered rehab three times in the span of three years, starting in spring 2016. "I started drinking lightly and then it got to be more and more," he told People about his alcoholism. "That's when I saw the problem around the corner, and I didn't want to be one of those guys."

Matt's accident

Matt Brown had a brush with death in May 2017, when he decided to store "a mason jar with gunpowder and cannon fuse" in his home refrigerator. The mason jar ended up exploding (can't say we're too surprised), blowing the door off the fridge and giving Matt a serious head injury.
