VIOLA DAVIS HAS BOLD WORDS FOR CRITICS OF HER MICHELLE OBAMA PORTRAYAL
By KATHRYN COOK
Viola Davis is an incredible actor, but she drew criticism for her portrayal of Michelle Obama in the Showtime series "The First Lady." Though Obama is known for pursing her lips often, social media says Davis repeats the gesture way too much: "What possessed Viola to think she should do that in every scene," one user tweeted.
Davis has choice words for her critics, saying on BBC News that it's "incredibly hurtful when people say negative things about your work." She acknowledged that criticism is an "occupational hazard" in her industry, but also said "Not everything is going to be an awards-worthy performance."
Davis has had regrets about roles before. Regarding the hit 2011 film "The Help," she said, "it wasn't the voices of the maids that were heard [...] the whole premise is, I want to know what it feels like to work for white people and to bring up children in 1963, [but] I never heard that in the course of the movie."
