Murphy's condition deteriorated quickly; Block wrote that she took a large amount of antibiotics, antidepressants, and cough and cold medicine. She also took anti-inflammatory medicine due to pain from her period, which was her second in a month, causing "anemia that cut her red-blood count to a quarter of normal."
The medication did not alleviate Murphy's symptoms, and on the final evening of her life, Block wrote that her had turned blue, and her lungs were filled with fluid. Murphy tried holistic treatments until attempting to see a physician, but her never made it. Her official cause of death was pneumonia.
