Alanis Morissette’s album “Jagged Little Pill” was the soundtrack of many a ‘90s teenager’s life, and her bitter breakup hit “You Oughta Know” is surrounded by speculation as to who the song is about. Believe it or not, the strongest contender is Dave Coulier, AKA Joey of “Full House” — is there any truth to this rumor?

Though the origins of the rumor are lost to the ages, many Morrisette fans believed that Coulier broke her heart at some point, and in 2019, Morrisette finally confirmed that she dated him in the early ‘90s. That means she was 17 or 18 at the time, while he was 33, which is… odd, to say the least.

Morrisette says she’ll never reveal who “You Oughta Know” is about, and she’s “intrigued [that] more than one person has taken credit for it [...] I don't know if you want to take credit for being the person”. Take a look at the lyrics and you’ll say “no kidding,” but Coulier has indeed made claims about the song.

Coulier insists “You Oughta Know” is about him, and uses these lyrics as proof: “Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity / I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner”. Coulier recalls how “We had already broken up. She called and I said, ‘Hey, you know, I'm right in the middle of dinner.’ [...] When I heard the line, it was like, uh-oh.”
