Anthony Mason To Serve As Interim Anchor Of CBS Evening News

Variety is reporting that CBS veteran Anthony Mason will take over the reigns at CBS Evening News as the network begins to find a permanent replacement for ousted anchor Scott Pelley.

Mason, who currently anchors CBS This Morning on the weekends, will reportedly serve as interim anchor throughout the summer. An official replacement for the evening news program has yet to be named.

Pelley's abrupt exit was first reported on the evening of Tuesday, May 30, 2017, amid rumors of a clash with CBS News president David Rhodes.

The story broke while Pelley was on assignment for 60 Minutes; rumors of his departure erupted earlier Tuesday after staffers saw that his office was being packed up, according to Page Six.

He's expected to move to 60 Minutes full time, although Variety says he will still return to CBS Evening News before signing off for good.

Pelley joined CBS Evening News in 2011 following the high-profile departure of Katie Couric.
