Stars Who Have An Unhealthy Relationship With Their Ex

Celebrities can be hard to keep up with, especially their relationship statuses. For every long-standing, healthy Hollywood relationship, there seem to be five that have gone awry. Not everyone can be Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.

And while we love to hear about the Hanks and the Wilsons of the world, who warm our hearts and restore our faith in love, it's equally entertaining to read updates on the celebrity relationships that are a bit messier. A celebrity breakup isn't heart-warming, but it's definitely interesting.

Not all breakups are full of tea, though. There are some former couples, like Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, who befriended their ex's new significant other. Or Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, who stayed friends for the sake of their children. Those couples are proof that some stars remain amicable after their breakups, but other former couples have anything but love for each other after splitting up. Let's get into it.

Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal's relationship is not all too well

Grammy-winning recording artist Taylor Swift is known for her past relationships with some of the most famous men on the planet, but she's better known for writing hit songs about her breakups. The singer-songwriter has penned dozens of tunes about her love life, including "All Too Well," which fans believe details her breakup with actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

Per Us Weekly, the former couple began dating in late 2010, and before 2011, the relationship had fizzled. In 2012, Swift released a new album, "Red," and fans were quick to dissect the meaning of the lyrics, specifically those in "All Too Well," fixating on the mention of her scarf he kept.

Fast-forward nearly ten years after the album's initial release. Swift, after major drama with her former record label and Scooter Braun, began re-recording and re-releasing her old albums, including "Red." The 2021 version featured a ten-minute version of "All Too Well" and subsequently reignited the years-old drama, as fans looked for more lyrical clues to her former relationship with Gyllenhaal.

Swift joined Seth Meyers on his late night show to discuss her re-recorded album, noting she was enjoying the release much more the second time around. Meyers asked how her muse might feel about the song a decade later, to which she said, "I haven't thought about their experience." A source shared Gyllenhaal's thoughts on the matter, telling E! News, "Jake has no interest in any of it. ... He's ignoring all of the noise." He did not, however, mention the scarf.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still battling in court

Two of the most famous actors in the world, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, seemed destined to be with each other. Their relationship began after filming a movie together, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," and immediately they were Hollywood's it couple. They had children together, and Pitt even adopted the children Jolie had adopted independently prior to the start of their relationship. The two officially wed in 2014, putting a legal stamp on what seemed to be the perfect union.

The marriage didn't last long, and in 2016, Jolie filed for divorce, per BBC, citing irreconcilable differences. Since then, Pitt and Jolie have been involved in legal proceedings pertaining to their divorce, with issues ranging from custody agreements to the separation of their estate.

In an interview with The Guardian, Jolie opened up, as much as she could, about the issues she and her children still face in regard to her prior relationship. When asked if she was alluding to her divorce from Pitt, as well as the domestic violence allegations she leveled against him, Jolie nodded yes, and answered in the affirmative when the reporter asked if she "fear[ed] for the safety of her family." "It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children," Jolie added.

Per Us Weekly, Pitt is focused on the future. "Brad hopes that one day he and Angelina find a way to forgive each other and move forward, for the kids' sake if nothing else," a source said.

Naomi Campbell and Vladislav Doronin had petty lawsuits

Supermodel Naomi Campbell and businessman Vladislav Doronin began dating in 2008 and broke up five years later. According to a source who spoke to Page Six, the two split up because Doronin was "too swept up in the celebrity lifestyle." Years after the breakup, Campbell and Doronin became entrenched in legal battles against each other.

Campbell was the first to sue, per the New York Post, as some of her belongings were still in Doronin's possession, and she wanted them back. Doronin, who is a literal billionaire, retaliated by countersuing Campbell for millions of dollars, claiming she is actually the one in possession of his belongings ($3 million worth, according to Doronin).

A friend close to the former couple said of the legal issues, "It can't just be about the cash, it's about the game. It's a power thing." In any event, the couple is not on good terms. Campbell has moved on, though, and welcomed her first child, a daughter, in 2021 (per her Instagram). "There is no greater love," she noted in the caption.

Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb are still fighting over one major issue

"Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara was engaged to her ex Nick Loeb, a businessman, for two years. During their relationship, the two underwent fertility treatments in an effort to have a child together, per The Sun. They froze three embryos at a California clinic and signed a contract agreeing that neither party could use the embryos without the other's consent.

After their relationship had ended, Loeb fought for custody of the embryos, hoping to implant them into a surrogate who would carry them until birth. The businessman even brought the case to Louisiana, hoping the state would give him a different outcome than in California.

His attempt was futile, though, and, per People, the court granted Vergara a permanent injunction, barring Loeb from utilizing any frozen embryos without her consent, as was agreed upon in their contract. The outcome didn't sit well with Loeb, and he released a statement saying, "It's sad that Sofia, a devout Catholic, would intentionally create babies just to kill them." In 2021, Loeb was still trying to gain custody of the embryos in Louisiana.

Sam Smith shaded Jonathan Zeizel on stage

Sam Smith is a popular British recording artist who's won many prestigious awards for their music, including four Grammy Awards. Much of their success came after releasing their debut album "In the Lonely Hour," which earned them multiple accolades.

Smith had been dating actor and model Jonathan Zeizel at the same time they were recording their album. The pair were together for a couple months, per the Daily Mail, and were quick to share their relationship with the world, posting pictures to social media, which Smith regretted.

The singer-songwriter doesn't look too favorably on the relationship in hindsight. As the outlet reported, they told ES Magazine, "I would say it was a relationship, but I still feel like I haven't had a proper boyfriend."

Smith got the last laugh, though. After writing their hit song "Stay With Me" about their relationship with Zeizel, the musician took to the Grammys stage to publicly shade their model ex again. "I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys," they said.

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray don't speak about each other anymore

In the mid 2000s, Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray were one of Hollywood's hottest couples. After meeting on the set of the iconic teen drama "One Tree Hill," Bush and Murray began dating, and eventually became engaged. Their marriage didn't last long, though, and after five months, the couple announced they were separating (per People). For years to come, Bush and Murray's former relationship would continue to be a topic of conversation, as the two kept working together on the set of "One Tree Hill" until Murray's departure in 2009.

In 2014, after the show had ended and nearly 10 years after their split, Bush answered a question on "Watch What Happens Live" about her former marriage, noting, "My mother once said to me, that if you don't have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all," adding, "We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place."

A few years later, Bush further discussed her marriage to Murray on Radio Andy, revealing that she never wanted to get married. These comments didn't sit well with Murray, and his rep shared with Us Weekly, "This story is ludicrous," adding that Murray "conducts himself in a completely professional manner and would never marry for any reason but love."

These days, the stars don't talk about each other. Bush said on "Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum" that she doesn't want to discuss a decision she made as "a dumb kid" at 21, mainly because her words are often twisted around after the fact.

Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande used their work to throw jabs

In addition to his career, comedian and "Saturday Night Live" star Pete Davidson is known for dating some of the most beautiful and famous women on the planet, including Kate Beckinsale and Kim Kardashian. But before dating either of those women, Davidson was famously engaged to pop superstar Ariana Grande.

After their engagement, the two quickly moved in together, and, according to since-deleted social media posts of Grande's and "SNL" clips of Davidson's, they were quite smitten. However, their engagement didn't last long.

TMZ broke the news of their split, and it seemed amicable at first. Grande released her hit song "thank u, next," which mentioned Davidson, and her other famous exes, directly, and she left him a message in the song's music video, saying "sorry I dipped." Davidson had kind words to say, too, telling Paper magazine, "I hope she's well. I hope she's very happy."

Davidson's perspective may have shifted, as he gave more of his thoughts about their breakup on his Netflix comedy special "Alive From New York." "She won Billboard's Woman of the Year and I got called 'butthole eyes' by Barstoolsports.com," he quipped (via Vulture). As told by People, Grande eventually returned the shade, per fan theories, with lyrics from her album "Positions," like "I'm just hoping I don't repeat history," hinting at Davidson on the syllable "-peat."

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are not in a good place

Another Hollywood it couple to fall victim to the relationship curse most celebrities seem to be under, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were the power couple of Disney-Channel-watching-millennials' dreams. After meeting on the set of their film "The Last Song," the two were on-again-off-again for years before ultimately tying the knot in 2018, only to separate just months later.

Cyrus has left many hints about her past relationship in her music, and radio host Howard Stern asked several questions about their relationship and specific references on her album "Plastic Hearts." "I don't get off on drama or fighting," the star said. She added, "I do not seek conflict at all ... there was too much conflict."

In addition to her musical Easter eggs, Cyrus left a comment on a TikTok video, as reported by The U.S. Sun, congratulating a couple on their engagement with the message, "Hope it goes better for you two than it did for me."

Hemsworth hasn't had much to say about his ex-wife, but his brother, Chris Hemsworth, has seemingly hinted at his feelings on the matter, telling News.com.au, "We got him out of Malibu!" after Hemsworth moved from Malibu, California, back to his home country of Australia post-breakup.

Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding hashed it out via song

Shouldn't famous songwriters know not to date other famous songwriters? In today's world, dating a prolific pop singer and composer almost certainly means part of your relationship is going to be immortalized in pop music, and the entire world is going to have access to intimate parts of your life, especially if you're with an international superstar like Ed Sheeran.

Ellie Goulding learned that the hard way, apparently, after Sheeran released "Don't," in which he allegedly calls out Goulding for sleeping with another man while they were together. Fans speculated that the track was about his ex, and he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he had never actually confirmed the subject matter, but the song was still a necessary way to process anger. "For me, it needed to be done," he said. "It didn't necessarily have to go on the album, but it definitely needed to be written."

Goulding later wrote a song called "On My Mind," seemingly about Sheeran. After being asked whether the song is really about Sheeran in an interview with Seventeen, Goulding said they had "hung out," but she denied anything else, explaining, "We were never in a relationship. My song is not about him." Ouch.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie aren't on good terms

For nearly a decade, pop music icon Madonna was married to acclaimed film director Guy Ritchie. While together, Madonna gave birth to their son, and the couple adopted two children. Their marriage was marked by a poor-performing joint project, a rumored vow renewal, and a messy, expensive divorce.

After the news of their divorce broke, details into their marriage were shared, highlighting the dysfunction. As sources told People, the two had disagreements for years over relationship needs, their children, and religion. In an interview with Newsweek, nearly four years after separating from Ritchie, Madonna all but confirmed the two had major issues, noting, "Then time goes by...and there are cracks in the veneer. It's not as romantic as it used to be."

While the two maintain some sort of a relationship for the sake of their shared children, things still seem to be tense between them. As reported by the Daily Mail, Ritchie and Madonna were spotted in 2020 at an art gallery event, and Ritchie appeared "strained" upon seeing his ex-wife, who left only 30 minutes later.

Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna have legal issues

Though he's the least famous of his entire family, Rob Kardashian's personal life unfortunately isn't any less complicated than that of his siblings. Since dating model Blac Chyna on and off for about a year, the two have had to maintain a relationship to co-parent their daughter, and things between them have been anything but healthy.

We could walk through a timeline of their strained relationship, but haven't the time, as it's long and complicated. Trust us. But as of early 2022, the two are still involved in an intense legal battle.

In September 2021, per Newsweek, Kardashian filed new court papers that pertain to the ongoing domestic violence lawsuit he filed long ago against Chyna. In January 2022, E! News reported that the court has allowed Chyna's legal team to depose three of Kardashian's sisters, as well as his mother, for the case, striking down a motion they had filed to be left out of the proceedings.

Neither Kardashian nor Chyna have made public comments about the other as of late, but the court documents speak plenty to their troubled relationship status.
