Meryl Streep Reveals Why Mariah Carey Stole Her Seat At 2018 Golden Globes

The Post star is setting the record straight.

On Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, Hollywood legend Meryl Streep appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and opened up about her time at the 2018 Golden Globes the night before. After commenting on Oprah Winfrey's potential 2020 presidential run, Streep responded to reports that singer Mariah Carey took her seat at the big awards show.

"B***h stole my seat," Streep joked. "I came over, and there she was next to [director Steven] Spielberg, sucking up."

But Streep didn't let the gag go too far. She explained that, when awards shows come back from commercial break, they make everyone take a seat — no matter where they are.

"It's like musical chairs in a way," host Jimmy Kimmel added. "You were left out."

Fortunately, Streep had a plan when she found her seat to be taken — sitting on Carey's lap. "It looked comfy," Streep said, laughing.

On Twitter the night before, Carey revealed that she'd stolen Streep's chair at the big event. "Got caught mingling on the way to the loo during a commercial break.. took the first seat available, happens to be right next to Steven Spielberg," she wrote. "Cut to next commercial break, guess who comes back to her seat."

Describing their dialogue, Carey continued, "(me) Dear Meryl, please forgive me!!! 🙌🙌 (MERYL STREEP) You can take my seat any time! 😂😂"
