Celebs Who Can't Stand Justin Bieber
There is perhaps no more divisive figure in the world of pop music than Justin Bieber. On the one hand, there is his army of loyal — and in some cases frighteningly obsessed — fans, known by the rather apostolic moniker, Beliebers. On the other hand, is literally everyone else, a varied group of normal folk and celebrities alike, who share the common trait of a deep intolerance for the Maple wunderkind. There seems to be no in between: You either follow Bieber like he's the Second Coming or you think he's all Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse combined. The stars on this list fall into the latter category, and they aren't afraid to publicly own it.
Seth Rogen
It takes a lot to irk a generally jovial guy like Seth Rogen, but Bieber managed to do it on more than once occasion, prompting the comedy star to unload on the "Sorry" singer with a hilarious vengeance.
Rogen began his barrage on Bieber with the rather blunt 2014 tweet, "All jokes aside, Justin Bieber is a piece of s**t," which as far as opening salvos goes, is pretty epic. He elaborated on his beatdown of the Biebs during an interview with Howard Stern by saying, "[Bieber] is a good example of someone who you meet, and you think you're gonna hate him, and then you get to hate him as much as you thought."
Rogen's non-love for his fellow Canuck all stemmed from a few backstage encounters in which Bieber allegedly flexed his superstar status hard, coming across as "a bit of a d**k," to use the colorful parlance of the Knocked Up star.
In the end, Rogen couldn't stay mad at his home country's finest musical export. During an appearance on Ellen, the Neighbors star confessed that the only interaction he'd ever had with Bieber was actually "very pleasant," and that he'd attacked him afterwards because he "decided to be mean one day for no reason whatsoever." Plot twist: Rogen was actually the one being "a bit of a d**k" this whole time!
Hanson
All three members of Hanson sounded off on Bieber during an interview with the Australian radio station, Hit 107 (via Billboard). While playing a name-that-tune type of segment, the bro-band failed to recognize Bieber's hit track, "Despacito," then proceeded to liken the rest of his music to "chlamydia of the ear." Wow. That is a stunning amount of hubris coming from the creators of an earworm like "MMMBop," but don't worry, because the Beliebers were listening and ready to strike.
After receiving significant backlash for their comments, the members of Hanson appeared on Sunrise (via the Daily Mail) to explain themselves, saying it was all a big misunderstanding over a koala joke — Fun Fact: tons of koalas have the bacterial infection — which clumsily led into the Bieber remark. Middle brother and apparent fun hat enthusiast, Taylor, even took the additional step to attempt a one-eighty on the Biebs, saying, "I think he's clearly very talented. Often times what he's not doing on stage is what people seem to be talking about and that's where our joke was coming from."
Oh, so it was just a joke about how he gets venereal diseases when he's not performing? Glad that's all cleared up!
Gene Simmons
Kiss frontman Gene Simmons is another fellow musician who feels like Bieber has struck a sour note here and there, most notably the time he cancelled the remainder of his Purpose World Tour in July 2017. Asked by TMZ to give the "Never Say Never" singer some advice, Simmons said, "Get a life. You don't have to worry about anything. You're rich. In case you didn't notice, you're white. You got white privilege, b***h. There's nothing to complain about." He then said Bieber suffered from "the Beverly Hills blues," which includes gripes about limos and mansions.
But it wasn't enough for Simmons to just call Bieber entitled. He elaborated to Rolling Stone a month later by chalking up Bieber's mistakes to being young and stupid. Then he paid the Canadian crooner a compliment in only the way Simmons can. "As soon as he starts doing more serious music instead of little girl music, I think we'll all be surprised," he said, adding, "The kid can play instruments, he can sing, he looks good, he can dance. He can do better stuff, but look, his young, female fan base loves that, so there's nothing wrong with it." How kind?
Sharon Osbourne
One of the outspoken hosts of The Talk, and a music industry vet in her own right, Sharon Osbourne also went out of her way to unload on Bieber. This was prior to his 2017 tour cancellation, but after his streak of bad behavior in the early 2010's that would see him splashed across tabloid headlines for such antics as the infamous bucket-peeing incident, racing around the streets of his neighborhood in his Ferrari, and a DUI.
Speaking about Bieber with the Daily Beast in 2013, Osbourne said, "I feel really bad for him. There's this little kid with a huge dream, he's cute, girls love him, and he wants to be a mean boy, and he's about as mean as a f****n' kitten, and he's trying to act out ... It's like, 'Oh, we're the bad boys!' F**k off! You don't know what bad is. And I think that he's lost, I really do." She added, "Where do you go when you're a child entertainer and then you want to transition to be a man? Very few make it."
It was a bold condemnation, and one that Osbourne, whose own kids have had their fair share of trouble traversing fame, admittedly regrets. According to Entertainment Tonight Canada, Osbourne addressed her Bieber rage on The Talk in August 2017 when she said she "learned a huge mistake from Justin Bieber," and that she should "never have attacked anyone at that age, verbally, and made the comments that I made."
Drake Bell
Actor and musician Drake Bell is another non-Belieber who tried to walk back his beef with Biebs. In 2015, he told KTLA that the whole thing was a big misunderstanding after he retweeted a photoshopped pic of Bieber's DUI mugshot and was subsequently attacked by the pop idol's vicious horde of preteens. But Bell left out a few details.
According to Buzzfeed, Bell not only repeatedly tweeted digs at Bieber — most of which have been deleted, but thankfully saved by other sites for posterity — but he also said this: "Artists like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga have more sway over popular minds than a politician. They could get on a pedestal and say, 'This is how you should treat people,' but instead [Bieber's] going around telling kids that as long as you have enough money and swag, you can do whatever you want."
Though it seems like Bell's beef still lands primarily with Bieber's excitable fanbase, he's certainly not extending any olive branches by accusing the boy wonder of not doing anything to rein them in.
Keyshawn Johnson
We previously mentioned how Bieber rankled his neighbors in various ways over the years, particularly via the alleged reckless driving of his Ferrari through his high end Calabasas, Calif. community. One of the neighbors who took umbrage is former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who spoke with TMZ about Bieber's Fast and Furious cosplay.
"You got a 19-year-old kid, feeling entitled, speeding up and down the highway, that's why all the neighbors [are] mad," Johnson said, adding, "Then you got him spittin' on people — you can't do that!" Johnson even went so far as to confront Bieber at his home, but he refused to speak with the former baller, then later tried to say that it was actually his friend, rapper Lil Twist, who had been driving.
Johnson disputed that claim, telling TMZ, "Look man, I know the difference between a black kid driving a car and a white kid driving a car ... one thing that he does not have to do is answer to me. He has to answer to the D.A.'s office, so at the end of the day, him and his handlers, his goons, or whatever they are — his henchmen — they gotta protect him. He does nothing for me, I don't make money off of him." In other words: Bieber's probably not getting invited to play flag football at Johnson's house. Just a guess.
Zach Braff
Scrubs star Zach Braff keeps his digs at the "Despacito" singer on the appropriate battleground: social media. There have been a few times when Braff hopped on Twitter to throw a limited-character shade at some unsavory Bieber headlines, like this time in 2013 when photos of Bieber allegedly smoking a blunt were published by TMZ.
Then there was Bieber's Miami DUI, about which Braff snarkily commented, "Who amongst us hasn't drag-raced a Lambo in Miami on pills? #FreeBieber." Those are jokes that don't necessarily mean Braff totally has it in for Bieber, but what about this Vine (via HuffPost) Braff made in which he sings "Baby" then abruptly cuts to a stuffed monkey, presumably evoking Bieber's gut-wrenching decision to leave his beloved pet capuchin monkey, OG Mally, in Germany due to his failure to produce the animal's necessary travel documents. Bieber was reportedly "heartbroken" over the situation, according to a source who spoke with The Sun, which begs the question: Braff, have you no empathy for a boy and his monkey?
Bill Hader
It's almost impossible to imagine the seemingly always affable SNL alum Bill Hader having beef with anyone. Cut to Bieber hosting the late night sketch show where, according to Hader, he showed up with an entourage of around 20 people who got in the way of the cast backstage. "He had a guy holding a piece of pizza, a guy holding a diet coke, and going around stage you're trying to fight through all these people to get dressed," Hader told Howard Stern in 2013.
One year later, Hader was back in the headlines with another Bieber slam, this time in an excerpt from Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live that was published by the New York Post. "I really didn't enjoy having Justin Bieber around," Hader said. "He's the only one who lived up to the reputation. I think that's the only time I felt that way in eight years." Just to put that in perspective, Hader's time at SNL also included him enduring hosting stints by Lance Armstrong, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, and Shia LaBeouf (twice). We could go on, but we think you see what we're getting at here.
Marilyn Manson
Though this list is long and full of shade for the "Boyfriend" singer, there must be something slightly endearing about him, because Marilyn Manson, a one-time ferocious attacker of Bieber, also eventually backed off. But before we get to that, let's look at all of the fun trash talk, shall we?
According to Consequence of Sound, it all started with a merchandise line for Bieber's 2017 Purpose Tour, one item of which happened to be a shirt featuring Manson's face and the words, "Bigger Than Satan ... Bieber." That may have been okay had Bieber not approached Manson about the idea by wearing the shirt and allegedly saying, "I made you relevant again." This prompted Manson to demand "all the proceeds" from the shirts, which he got, as well as to describe the flawed fashionista as "a real piece of s**t in the way he had the arrogance to say that."
And yet, just a few months later, Manson popped up on Howard Stern (via People) and revealed a series of texts that Bieber sent him in which he apologized for the whole t-shirt drama. In a surprise twist, Manson wrote back, "We are cool. People just made that shirt stuff into a fake feud. Let's turn it upside down and f**k the press and do something together. It will be the best. And don't apologize. You weren't an a**hole. They asked if you were and I sort of agreed. I wasn't out to get you."
But wait, there's more! A month after the Stern interview, Manson appeared on another radio show and described Bieber as having "the mind of a squirrel" and that he didn't want to fight with him because "I don't like to fight with girls." So, they're fighting again? This is all too confusing, so we're just going to move on.
Orlando Bloom
The saga between Orlando Bloom, Justin Bieber, and their then-respective ladies, Miranda Kerr and Selena Gomez, is something out of a torrid middle school diary. First, Bieber and Gomez broke up and got back together a bunch of times with a rumor that he hooked up with Bloom's ex-wife, Miranda Kerr, tossed into the mix. Then, Gomez was spotted outside a Chelsea Handler show with Bloom, and later rumored to have made out with him at a Vegas casino, sparking more gossip about a possible romance there.
With the stage set for a showdown, Bieber and Bloom nearly came to blows at a swanky Ibiza restaurant, ironically while neither of them was even romantically linked to Kerr or Gomez at the time. Nevertheless, according to eyewitnesses who spoke with The Mirror, Bloom became enraged at comments Bieber supposedly made about Kerr, at which point he "jumped over a sofa" and lunged at Bieber. No one actually landed any punches, and the video of the incident is decidedly less sensational than the stories that ensued. It seems to merely show Bloom taking a step toward Bieber and extending his arm before a full entourage of men separate the two.
Afterward, Bieber responded by posting a photo of a crying Bloom to his Instagram. As far as we can tell, Bloom hasn't engaged in the feud in any way since, but we feel pretty confident saying nobody at SNL is going to catch him holding Bieber's pizza or Diet Coke backstage anytime soon.
Marg Helgenberger
This one's a little tricky because technically, CSI star Marg Helgenberger was speaking on behalf of that show's crew when she voiced concern over Bieber's behavior. But she did refer to him as having acted like "kind of a brat" during his 2011 cameo on the long-running CBS police procedural, according to an interview with the French radio show, Le Grand Direct des Medias. Claiming he had been "nice" to her, Helgenberger alleged that Bieber also "locked one of the producers in a closet and he put his fist through a cake that was on the craft services table."
Bieber responded on Twitter, writing, "It's kinda lame when someone you met briefly and never worked with comments on you. I will continue to wish them luck and be kind." His rebuke must have stuck with Helgenberger, who later softened her stance during a 2015 Entertainment Tonight interview. "Honestly, he was lovely to me," she said, "and I think some of the crew had some issues with him, but, you know, but they should talk about that, not me."
Okay seriously, we're starting to think this kid is some kind of wizard or mind control expert. He either punched a cake or he didn't. Which is it, Marg?
Jon Hamm
Stop us if this is starting to sound familiar: celeb bashes Bieber. Celeb then has a change of heart and now loves Bieber. Count Mad Men star Jon Hamm among that group, because after he called the Great White North's favorite son a "s**thead" in Men's Fitness in 2014, it only took a few years and a delightful concert performance to turn him around.
As a guest on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in August 2017, Hamm said that he caught the Biebs' show while on location in Atlanta for Baby Driver. "I was like, I don't know, he's got a big album out, a couple cool songs, why not?'" Hamm said, adding, "I wanted to hear 15,000 teenage kids lose their minds. Mission accomplished."
Granted, Hamm could still personally detest Bieber's offstage antics (which is what he was specifically referring to in that Men's Fitness interview) while simultaneously loving his music, but that's a mystery we'll have to wait to solve. For now, we just want to know if for a second during the concert, Hamm contemplated getting back into character, calling up January Jones, and singing, "Is it too late now to say sorry?"
Ronda Rousey
Here's one that's probably never getting resolved, because as of this writing, Justin Bieber and UFC star Ronda Rousey are still in their respective corners, waiting to land the next blow.
Rousey drew first blood when she revealed to Cosmopolitan that Bieber was "really rude to my little sister at the Cannes Film Festival." Apparently, Rousey tried to get him to take a quick photo with her starstruck 16-year-old sis, but Bieber declined, saying, "I've already taken a billion pictures today, OK?"
"Yeah, I don't think I'd want to hang out with him," Rousey continued. "I'm not a Belieber. I was, but I'm not anymore." Once again, Bieber apologized for his actions, which he claims he doesn't remember, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight (via ESPN), but then he turned right around and threw some epic shade Rousey's way. "Did you see Ronda Rousey?" he said, when asked a question about his own boxing skills. "She got knocked out cold! Oh my God, she got knocked out so bad. Yeah, no, she got pummeled."
He also tweeted the same comment, with a little extra bratty spice, on the night of the actual fight in which Rousey took a stunning defeat at the hands of Holly Holm. Rousey has yet to return the dig, but then again, she's much better at letting her fists do the talking.
Jon Bon Jovi
When rocker Jon Bon Jovi heard that Bieber allegedly showed up 80 minutes late for a show in London, he did not hold back on his criticism. Speaking with the Evening Standard, the "Bad Medicine" singer said, "Every generation has guys that do that, none of that is new." He added, "Do it once, you can be forgiven. Do it enough times and shame on you. They won't have you back. Then it just becomes a cliché. It's really not cool — you're an a**hole. Go to f**kin' work!"
Granted, his remarks are more of a general indictment of rock star diva behavior and not a specific claim that he can't stand Bieber, but we're still counting it. Especially because if anyone gets to shame a young punk of a pop star for disrespecting his fans, it's the guy who's been faithfully belting out "Livin' on a Prayer" for the past three decades, even though at this point, he probably has to gag his way through the chorus.
Patrick Carney
The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney felt the full wrath of the Beliebers after he made a pretty banal statement about their maple leaf king while TMZ cameras were rolling. Asked whether he thought Bieber should have been nominated for a Grammy in 2013, Carney replied, "He's rich, right? Grammys are for like music, not for money ... and he's making a lot of money. He should be happy." Pretty harmless, right? Wrong.
What followed was a torrent of death threats, homophobic slurs, and general chaos via Twitter, all spurred, according to Carney, by Bieber's primer tweet, "The Black Keys drummer should be slapped around haha." Speaking with Rolling Stone about the fallout, Carney said, "Justin Bieber, like a f***ing irresponsible a******, sicced 40 million Twitter followers on me because I paid him a compliment he didn't understand. I'm saying that he should be grateful that he has a f**king career in music. And he shouldn't be f**king telling his followers to slap me, and then also be doing anti-bullying bulls**t. It's so irresponsible."
Carney wasn't finished there. "I mean, Justin Bieber is a f**king moron and that's the gist of what I was saying." He added, "Honestly, I feel bad for him."
Joel McHale
Joel McHale took plenty of shots at Justin Bieber and a whole host of famous folks as the longtime host of The Soup, but it was an appearance on Conan that really pulled back the curtain on his true feelings towards the Biebs.
Asked by host Conan O'Brien why Bieber was "throwing eggs at his neighbor's house," McHale speculated that the real problem with Bieber is that he's so rich, he's just bored and acting out because he has nothing better to do. He also bluntly stated, "Because he's a f***ing idiot."
McHale hasn't said a whole lot about Bieber since that January 2014 interview, and that's probably because he's pretty much already said it all.
