The Complicated Relationship Between Da Brat And Her Sister LisaRaye McCoy

Da Brat was introduced to her wife Jesseca "Judy" Dupart by her sister LisaRaye McCoy. Initially, the Kaleidoscope Hair Products honcho reached out to McCoy. "I met her before she even met my sister. She and I were doing some videos for her Kaleidoscope products because she was actually a fan," McCoy told Madame Noire in April 2020. According to "The Players Club" actor, it was her relationship with Dupart which led to Brat getting to know her future wife. Unfortunately, as Brat and Judy's relationship blossomed, it became a point of contention for the two sisters.

The tension between the "Funkdafied" rapper and her sister came to the forefront during a 2020 episode of "Cocktails with Queens" when McCoy's co-hosts gave her a birthday surprise by inviting Brat on as a guest. McCoy was visibly emotional, as Brat revealed that the two siblings had not been speaking. Apparently, McCoy took exception to how her sister announced her relationship with Dupart. "I just didn't want to hear it from the blogs and the interviews of people asking me questions ... because I didn't hear it from you," McCoy said. "And so I'm hurt. That's what I am," she added while explaining why her and the "Brat Loves Judy" star had grown distant.

By April 2021, the sisters appeared to bury the hatchet, as McCoy showed up to Brat's birthday celebration and the two shared an emotional hug. Although, that was not the end of their drama.

Why LisaRaye McCoy was upset over Da Brat's announcement

Friction rose between LisaRaye McCoy and Da Brat when the actor believed that she had once again been left out in the cold by her sister and Jesseca Dupart. McCoy was upset when the couple announced on social media that they were looking to "extend their family." "I did see the reveal of them expecting and expanding their family and I didn't know anything about it as well," she said on an episode of the "It's Tricky with Raquel Harper" podcast in February 2022.

The "Give It 2 You" rapper was upset that her sister went to the media with her qualms. "I feel like we should handle our personal stuff or any questions that we have for each other amongst each other," Brat said on an episode of "Brat Loves Judy" which aired June 2022. That frustration led to a tense exchange between McCoy and her sister's wife. "There's a thing that keeps happening that [Brat] doesn't talk to you about, but it affects her emotionally," the hair care CEO said. That criticism was not well-received by McCoy who went on the defensive.

Meanwhile, Brat confronted her sister over airing family grievances. She also tried to play peacekeeper between her wife and McCoy. Although, the "Cocktails with Queens" host put the blame on Dupart. "Whatever she come with, I'm coming with too," McCoy said. Despite that setback, the sisters had made significant progress towards reconciliation.

Da Brat and LisaRaye McCoy bonded at her wedding

Leading up to Da Brat's wedding to Jesseca Dupart in February 2022, LisaRaye McCoy made a special gesture for the couple as a way to make amends. Before their wedding, she gifted them with a custom-made plaque that had "Grace" inscribed. McCoy asked Brat and Dupart to open the gift and explained the significance. "[O]ur start over is a real start over for me," she said on an episode of "Brat Loves Judy." Dupart appreciated the gesture from her sister-in-law. "I think it's a great start in moving forward into having a great relationship," she said.

The "Sittin' On Top of the World" artist used her wedding as an opportunity to gush over her sister. Brat uploaded an adorable snap to Instagram from the wedding day, where McCoy was a bridesmaid, and added a lengthy and touching caption. "My sister's keeper. Me and my Punk. @thereallraye1 I love u Pizzy and I appreciate you being all you are and have been to me my whole life," she wrote while reminiscing about childhood memories.

A year after their wedding, Brat announced she was pregnant in February 2023. The popular gossip blog The Shade Room reposted footage of McCoy's 2022 interview about being upset that she was not directly notified about the couple's expansion. Dupart quickly shot that down. "THIS IS A LIE! SHADEROOM Please check the date on this interview and the accuracy," Dupart wrote on Instagram to clarify there was no new beef.
