Jennifer Lopez Injured Jane Fonda On The Monster-In-Law Set (& Never Apologized)

Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez had quite a memorable experience on the set of "Monster-In-Law." Not just because it was a fun film to make, but also because an injury occurred on-set. The premise of the movie was about an overbearing mother-in-law played by Fonda who despises her son's fiancee, played by Lopez.

The singer had not anticipated the "Barbarella" actor to play her mother-in-law because Fonda had supposedly retired from acting, per Entertainment Tonight. So, when Lopez discovered that the legendary actor would take on the role, she was ecstatic. Lopez shared on The View, "Well when I found out she was doing it. I was thrilled... and when you hear Jane Fonda wants to do the role I was like, 'What? Oh my God!' I was totally excited." The two grew extremely close throughout filming, and Fonda has gushed about working with the "On the Floor" singer, per WMTV. Fonda shared, "We became friends on 'Monster-In-Law' a film where I had to hate Jennifer. It was the hardest acting job I ever had."

Watching the film, you would never know the two became friends. Their hatred for each other on-screen had them in mischievous situations, one of which involved a slapping scene that went sour. It's normal for an actor to get injured on the set of an action film, but not so much on a rom-com. However, believe it or not, Fonda ended up getting hurt on-set, and she's a little salty about it.

Jennifer Lopez has never apologized for hurting Jane Fonda

One of the most memorable scenes from "Monster-In-Law" is when Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez's characters get so angry with one another that they begin to slap each other. Obviously, the slaps weren't real, or so people thought. Apparently, while filming the scene, Lopez actually nicked Fonda in the face.

When looking at her past roles on "The Drew Barrymore Show" in 2023, Fonda revealed how the whole slapping situation went down on the set of the film. She said, "Well, okay, the thing that comes to mind right away is, we have a slapping scene. I slap her, she slaps me, I slap her," she continued, "Well, Jennifer — as per Jennifer — she had this enormous diamond ring. And so, when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow." That seemed shocking in itself, but the actor left viewers in awe once more after she revealed that Lopez had never apologized for the injury. Although the actor looked upset, it was evident she moved on as she let out a little laugh.

Lopez definitely didn't have any malicious intent, but an apology probably would have been nice. The singer has not commented on the lack of apology, but she has talked about the incident in the past. And her story is slightly different from Fonda's.

Jennifer Lopez called Jane Fonda a 'gangster'

Jennifer Lopez isn't oblivious to the fact that she injured Jane Fonda on the set of "Monster-In-Law." The actor recalled the moment that she accidentally hit Fonda after rewatching the famous slap scene in 2019, per Access Hollywood. She said, "She really really went for it. So did I, and then I punched her in the eye by mistake." The slap was so hard that Lopez remembered the "Klute" actor had a "blood blister" on her face. She said, "My nail went up into her eye, and she didn't care. She's such a gangster b***h." While Fonda didn't care at the moment, she definitely cares now. Hopefully, an apology will come, or maybe not because the two have become great friends.

In fact, Fonda has once credited Lopez for her comeback to acting, per the Daily Mail. She said, "The biggest stroke of luck was getting the role in 'Monster-in-Law' at a point in my career when I had been out of the acting business for 15 years or more." Of course, she was nervous about her return, but she knew in Lopez's company, it would be a smash hit. She said, "I thought: 'People are going to come to the movie to see J-Lo, but they'll rediscover Fonda,' and that's what happened." Although the slap scene could have made Fonda dislike Lopez, the two have created an amazing bond, all thanks to a film that came out nearly 10 years ago.
