XXXTentacion's Child Born Months After Late Rapper's Death

XXXTentacion's child was born seven months after the controversial artist was shot and killed.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, XXXTentacion's mother, Cleopatra Bernard, announced on her Instagram Stories that her son's child was born, as reported by E! News. XXXTentacion's girlfriend Jenesis Sanchez reportedly gave birth to a baby boy, whom she named Gekyume Onfroy.

"Yume has officially arrived," Bernard wrote in her Instagram post, adding a baby emoji.

According to a statement from XXXTentacion's family that was reported by People, Gekyume was indeed born on Jan. 26, three days after what would have been the rapper's 21st birthday.

XXXTentacion's family reportedly confirmed the child's well-being to Complex, and they also explained baby Gekyume's unusual moniker. "Gekyume's name is derived from a word X created prior to his passing, which means 'a different state' or 'next' universe of thought," they said in a statement obtained by the publication. They noted that XXXTentacion (real name Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy) had "specifically" chosen the name Gekyume "for his first-born son," adding, "This family is honored to fulfill his wish and shower baby Gekyume with love."

As Nicki Swift previously reported, XXXTentacion was shot and killed outside of a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield, Fla. on June 18, 2018. Days later, his mother announced that her son's girlfriend was pregnant with his child, sharing a sonogram on social media and writing, "He left us a final gift" (via People). According to TMZ, XXXTentacion had learned about the pregnancy before his death and hadn't announced the news to his fans because he'd wanted his girlfriend to "have a stress-free pregnancy."

As noted by BBC News, XXXTentacion — whose final album, Skins, was released posthumously in December 2018 — was facing "15 felony charges" when he died. Among those charges were "aggravated battery of a pregnant woman in 2016, domestic battery by strangulation and witness tampering."
