Gwendoline Christie Stuns On Red Carpet At 2019 Emmy Awards

All hail, Gwendoline Christie! The Game of Thrones actress turned heads when she stepped out on the red carpet at the 2019 Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019.

Depending on who you ask, Christie's red-and-white Gucci Resort gown, with its gorgeous gold detailing and brooch, channeled everything from the Pope to a Greek goddess to co-star Lena Headey's famous character, Cersei Lannister. And basically? We're all obsessed.

Perhaps best known for her portrayal of Brienne of Tarth on the long-running HBO fantasy series, the 40-year-old actress previously made headlines when she submitted herself for an outstanding supporting actress in a drama series nomination in July 2019.

While speaking with People on the red carpet, Christie explained, "I really have fallen in love with the character. I've fallen in love with what she represents ... She has a strong moral compass and a very deep sensitivity and vulnerability, and I felt she was a special and rare kind of character." She added, "For everything she represents in terms of women, I wanted there to be the possibility of the opportunity."

As for succeeding in nabbing a nod, Christie continued, "It's a feeling of hope and to got this far, I've won. I've never received something like this in my work before."

Twitter had a lot to say about Gwendoline Christie's Emmys look

It probably goes without saying that Twitter was beside itself after Gwendoline Christie rocked the red carpet at the 2019 Emmy Awards — and many social media users took to the platform to praise the Game of Thrones star's instantly iconic fashion moment.

"Now, I personally had accepted Gwendoline Christie as my lord and savior long ago, but I am glad it's catching on," one person tweeted, captioning side-by-side images of the actress and Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, another fan shared, "The G in Gwendoline Christie stands for God."

However, since the Twittersphere is the Twittersphere, not everyone agreed with this assessment and could get on board with the look. "Another one of my favorite awards show people is Gwendoline Christie. ... Just not my favorite look from her at all," one Twitter user wrote

That's fair enough. But whether or not Christie brings home the gold in her acting category, it's safe to say this TV star was the clear winner in the red carpet round of television's biggest night.
