Did Michelle Williams Secretly Marry Thomas Kail?
It looks like congratulations might be in order for Michelle Williams. Not only is the actress pregnant and expecting a child with producer and director Thomas Kail, but the duo might be another pair on the list of celebrity couples who have secretly gotten married! That's right, while some brides and grooms have weddings that are seen around the world, like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as well as Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, others manage to say "I do" without the public knowing until after the fact.
Rumors first started buzzing around Williams and Kail — who People magazine revealed had gotten engaged in December 2019 — when the Fosse/Verdon actress and the miniseries' executive producer were spotted in March 2020 wearing what appeared to be wedding rings, according to Us Weekly, who confirmed via a source that the duo had, indeed, tied the knot. "They're very happy and thrilled to be bringing a baby into the world," an insider told Us Weekly in January 2020. The source added that the star, who is already the mother to a daughter, Matilda (whose father was the late Heath Ledger), wanted "to be married" before welcoming her baby into the world.
While a secret wedding might be surprising news, it wouldn't be the first time that the multiple Oscar nominee hid (or at least chose not to immediately announce) the fact that she had gotten hitched.
This wouldn't be Michelle Williams's first secret marriage
Michelle Williams' relationship with Heath Ledger was fodder for romance-loving fans despite the fact that it seemed to make both stars incredibly uncomfortable. The two even appeared on Oprah together along with their Brokeback Moutain costars and ended up "winc[ing] and squirm[ing] ... as the world's most powerful talk show host ... probed them about their love affair," according to The Age. Perhaps because of that unenviable outcome, Williams has apparently chosen to keep her relationships relatively private — and we're not just referring to her possible secret marriage to Thomas Kail.
Williams "wed singer-songwriter Phil Elverum in a secret ceremony in the Adirondacks" in 2018, ABC News reported at the time. The nuptials were so private "that the only people to witness the ceremony were a few friends and the couple's two daughters from previous relationships."
However, things between Williams and Elverum obviously didn't last and the couple split in 2019 after less than a year of marriage. That being said, it seems that experience didn't sour Williams' taste for secret marriages as her relationship with Kail seems to prove.
