Former presidential hopeful and ex-mayor of South Bend, Ind., Pete Buttigieg emerged from obscurity in the 2020 presidential race and immediately stood out given his unique last name. He also made headlines due to his compelling background, which the Harvard graduate touched on to The New York Times, quipping that he's the "only left-handed Maltese-American-Episcopalian-gay-millennial-war veteran in the race." Not to mention, Buttigieg's husband, Chasten Buttigieg, gained a following with his supportive social media posts.

Though he had a growing popularity and, according to Vox"almost seemed lab-engineered to appeal to a variety of Democrats looking for a clear antidote to President Donald Trump," the young politician dropped out of the race in March 2020.

But Buttigieg stepped back into the spotlight in August 2020, when he was named one of the speakers at the Democratic National Convention. It sparked speculation that the politician might have a role in former Vice President Joe Biden and California Sen. Kamala's Cabinet if they win the election in November 2020.

All of this chatter has sparked renewed interest in Buttigieg's life, including his net worth. And although politicians are public servants, it doesn't mean they can't make bank. With that in mind, how much money did the mayor rake in before his presidential run? Some might find the answer surprising.

Pete Buttigieg isn't swimming in cash

It's worth noting that Pete "Mayor Pete" Buttigieg has raised an estimated and whopping $6.7 million for former Vice President and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, as Politico reported. But just because Buttigieg can raise a ton of money for Biden, it doesn't mean he has a lot of cash himself.

As reported by Forbes in 2019, Buttigieg had the smallest net worth among all of the Democratic presidential hopefuls, with about $100,000 of accumulated wealth between himself and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg. The outlet also noted that between the mayor's $45,000 advance for his book Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's Future and Chasten's position as a public school teacher, the couple collectively made $152,000 in 2018. Arguably a modest fortune, the couple may see a bump in pay grade if Mayor Pete lands a position in the potential Biden-Harris Cabinet.

Either way, don't expect Buttigieg to go on a spending spree anytime soon. The former mayor is very careful about money, talking to Market Watch about his parents' influence, "They made countless little decisions that I didn't always understand as a child, from always favoring store-brand cola and food to planning vacations around my Dad's frequent-flier miles, that helped them stay on good footing financially."

Now that we've covered Buttigieg's net worth, let's take a look at Kamala Harris' fortune.
