Aya Cash: Who Is The Boys' Star Married To?

Aya Cash's You're the Worst character Gretchen wasn't in the most functional relationship. Gretchen and Jimmy had plenty of sweet moments, of course, but their failure to communicate with each other and often-self-destructive behaviors got in the way of their relationship countless times. Fortunately, Cash's relationship with her real-life husband, Josh Alexander, seems much healthier.

The Boys star has been with Alexander — a director, producer, and writer — for 15 years now, and they've been married since 2012. Cash has been open about their visits to couples' therapy and their views on marriage and love. Plus, career-wise, Alexander and Cash have the entertainment industry in common, and they're happy to support each other's projects.

In April 2020, Cash shared an Instagram post about the 2018 documentary I'm Leaving Now, writing that it's "an undocumented New Yorker trying to go home after more than a decade in the States." Alexander was a producer on the film, and it's clearly an important one to both of them, as Cash's post showed them with the subject of the film.

Here's what else fans should know about Alexander's documentary work and the couple's relationship.

Aya Cash's husband Josh Alexander is also in the entertainment industry

While Aya Cash is the one with name recognition, Josh Alexander also has an extensive entertainment résumé. According to his IMDb page, Alexander directed the 2015 documentary Prescription Thugs. He's also been a producer on other documentaries, including Southern Rites and Pretty Old.

Alexander has also acted in a number of projects, including the comedy-horror movie Vamperifica and the comedy Supporting Characters. His most recent project is writing the upcoming documentary The Great Fellove about Cuban musician Francisco Fellove. The movie is slated to premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival in September 2020.

Alexander has appeared alongside Cash at countless red carpet appearances, too. Their respective bodies of work may be different, but they both know what Hollywood life is like, which is surely a positive factor in their relationship. And when they're not working, the two are likely relaxing together at home, like in this adorable photo Cash shared on Instagram.

Aya Cash has a great philosophy about marriage

Considering the fact that as many as 50% of American marriages end in divorce, it's natural for anyone to be skeptical about taking the plunge. But Aya Cash and Josh Alexander have a great outlook about marriage. "My parents have five marriages between them. So I thought, Why would you ever do that?" Cash said to Glamour in 2015. "But my husband said this great thing to me: 'Look, even if we don't make it, I would have wanted to have that experience with you, so let's have the experience of getting married and being married.'"

Cash went on to share with the magazine that marriage is about commitment, not just the "passion" that comes at the start of a relationship. "It's a commitment to do everything in your power to stay together until it's completely untenable," she said to Glamour. "We may go through things where we may hate each other for months at a time, and you get through that, work on it, go to therapy, do whatever you need to do to fix it until it can't be fixed. Passion is one thing, and love is another."

It sounds like Cash and Alexander have a realistic view about what marriage entails, and they're willing to put in the work.

Aya Cash and her husband have gone to couples' therapy

"We went to couples therapy right before we decided to get married to figure out if that was we wanted to do," Aya Cash told The Cut in January 2019. "We're not in crisis mode at all right now. Now we're just like, 'How do we be better? How do we have a better life?'"

Couples' therapy may have a stigma, but it shouldn't! Visiting a therapist with your partner can be a great way to get to the root of any disagreements you're having and allow for open communication, as Cash's comments illustrate. Even if there aren't any major problems, it's also a great way to learn more about how the other person is feeling.

"I joked to Josh that our vows were gonna be like, 'I promise to love you till I don't.' We're both fairly realistic," Cash told The Cut. "Josh said to me, 'Look, I will have wanted to do this in my life, so let's do it together and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. But we're gonna try everything until it doesn't.' And I think that's the commitment."

Considering they've been married for eight years, it's safe to say that the relationship has definitely worked.

Aya Cash and Josh Alexander had a total meet-cute

In an Instagram post in September 2019, Aya Cash shared a message for Josh Alexander on their seventh wedding anniversary. The Boys star shared that the two of them met when she was a waitress, long before she was starring in The Boys and You're The Worst.

"7 years since we got married. 14 years since I was your waitress and you left me your email with the tip. I made it very clear I was just looking for a little fun without commitment but it was more fun to commit to you," Cash wrote in her Instagram caption. "So proud of us for always working to be better together when sometimes it would have been easier to be apart. You are still the best person I know."

Cash and Alexander seem to have a realistic but optimistic view of marriage, and they're more than willing to put in the effort to maintain a happy relationship. Whatever future projects are in store, they'll be there to support each other.
