What Olivia Newton-John And John Travolta's Relationship Is Like Today

In 1978, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta became one of the most famous on-screen couples of all time when they starred together as Sandy and Danny in Grease. The actors became close while making and promoting the movie, but Travolta revealed that he was a fan of Newton-John even before the film. "There's only one person in the world that was Sandy, and that was Olivia Newton-John," the actor told Entertainment Tonight in 1998.

However, tragedy struck both actors decades later. Newton-John lost her father, as well as her goddaughter, to cancer before also being diagnosed with the disease, battling breast cancer several times since her original diagnosis in 1992. Travolta has not had an easy time either, dealing with an extortion plot amid losing his 16-year-old son, Jett, to a seizure in 2009. Just 11 years later, the star lost his wife of nearly 29 years, Kelly Preston, to cancer in July 2020.

Following Preston's death, Newton-John reached out to support Travolta — here's what she had to say.

Tragedy brought Newton-John and Travolta closer

Following the death of John Travolta's wife, fellow actor Kelly Preston, Olivia Newton-John helped him heal from the loss. In September 2020, Australian magazine New Idea reported that "they clicked right away all those years ago, but this tragedy has bonded them even more." As a survivor of cancer herself, Newton-John has been an incredibly understanding confidant for Travolta.

Newton-John personally spoke to ET Online about the situation in October 2020, calling Preston a "beautiful person, inside and out." The star added, "She had a gentle spirit and I just feel so, so much for John and the children. It's hard to put into words." Newton-John said the family was "coping as well as you can imagine," sharing, "it's a private journey and I respect that for them." Although she might not speak to Travolta every day, the singer and actor said they remain close. "I send my love and support as often as I can," Newton-John stated.

Although the two Grease stars may not be as close as Danny and Sandy, their continued friendship shows that they had more than just a good working relationship. In 2019, before the most recent tragedy, Travolta shared a photo on Instagram of the two reunited in their Grease costumes for a sing-a-long reunion, writing, "Grease is still the word." In good times and bad, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta continue to lean on and support each other.
