But viewers saw the pair's relationship quickly crumble as the long-distance couple shared the same space for the very first time, when Stephanie traveled all the way to Australia to be with Erika. Stephanie's health problems put stress on the duo, as did her reluctance to be physically intimate or affectionate with Erika. The latter issue even prompted some critical viewers to question whether Stephanie, who is bisexual, is really attracted to women. As if that weren't enough, Stephanie and Erika also fought frequently over trust issues around Erika's guy friends, and the fact that Stephanie wasn't out as bisexual to her mom.
Between all the constant arguments, viewers weren't surprised when Stephanie and Erika didn't manage to make it to the end of the season together. But what truly pushed these two over the edge? Here's what caused Stephanie and Erika's split.
Stephanie and Erika couldn't recover from this fight
According to Entertainment Tonight, Stephanie Matto and Erika Owens of 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days reached their breaking point during a discussion about Stephanie not being out to her mom. Erika revealed that she was once involved in a 10-year on-again-off-again relationship with a woman who wasn't out. It was painful to be "kept a secret," Erika said, which is why the situation with Stephanie was such a "big deal" to her. "I felt like the girl that I loved was embarrassed of me," she explained.
Unfortunately, instead of creating more empathy from Stephanie, this explanation only seemed to anger her. She was upset that Erika had never mentioned this relationship before and felt that she'd been lied to. "I'm so shocked right now," she said. "I feel like you're leaving information out." She added, "Why am I the one that's telling you all of my problems and all of the issues with me and you fail to mention something like that? That's a huge thing because she is the reason why now you're pressuring me to come out to my mom."
The argument quickly escalated into yelling, and at one point, Stephanie even smashed a bowl onto the floor and stormed out. While she later apologized for her outburst, she ultimately concluded that the pair would never get onto the same page, and Erika agreed.
Still, the pair told ET that they regret nothing. While they may not have lived happily ever after, their 90 Day Fiance journey was still history-making.
