The Truth About Tahar Rahim's Wife Leïla Bekhti

French actor Tahar Rahim is making headlines for his performance in the film The Mauritanian, which chronicles the true life story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi. He was held in Guantanamo Bay from 2002 until October 2016 with no charges, according to People. Slahi was accused of organizing the terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attack.

The film boasts a big cast. In addition to Rahim, Jodie Foster gives a stunning performance as his attorney Nancy Hollander. In fact, Foster was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role. Foster and Rahim star alongside Shailene Woodley and Benedict Cumberbatch in this intense film.

While Rahim is no stranger to rubbing shoulders with Hollywood A-listers, he also has a private life that we know less about. The actor, who is of Algerian descent, is married to another actor who also happens to be French and of Algerian descent: Leïla Bekhti. Here's everything we know about her.

Leïla Bekhti's friends talked her into trying out for a role and it worked

Leïla Bekhti is a super cool person. She was born in Issy-les-Moulineaux, a southwestern suburb of Paris, according to France Today. Bekhti is of Algerian descent and can actually speak Algerian Arabic, taught to her by her grandmother. While she's a superstar now, Bekhti didn't have a foot in the door of French cinema. She worked a series of jobs that even included telemarketing and helping out in her brother's clothing store, according to France Today.

But it was actually Bekhti's friends who pushed her to check out a casting. It was in 2005 and Bekhti tried out for a part in Kim Chapiron's film, Sheitan, an erotic comedy with a twist of horror. Amazingly, the risk worked and Bekhti landed the part of Yasmine. This launched Bekhti's career in film and she's taken roles in the movie Harkis and the adorable Paris, je t'aime, according to her IMDb credits, as well as TV shows like Longlasting Youth and Midnight Sun. Bekhti actually met her husband on one of her movies. Here's the scoop.

Leïla Bekhti was the only woman working on the film where she met Tahar Rahim

Leïla Bekhti was working on the 2009 film A Prophet, by director Jacques Audiard about a young Muslim man in a French prison. The film was a massive success and earned a whopping 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It also won nine César awards as well as the coveted Grand Prix at Cannes, according to France Today. Tahar Rahim took on the lead role of the character Malik El Djebena and, interestingly, Bekhti had the only female role in the whole film. This was the introduction she and Rahim needed.

They dated for three years and they got married in 2010, according to Hello! Magazine. They had their first child, a son named Souleymane in 2017, and in 2020 they had a daughter.

Bekhti keeps her kids out of social media and her Instagram presence is devoted mostly to her films, politics, and personal photos. In fact, she rarely posts pics of her hubby, so she likes to keep her private life private. Fair enough!
