Strange Things About Jennifer Aniston And Justin Theroux's Marriage

It's hard to believe that Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux tied the knot over a year ago, just as it's hard to imagine one without the other. The couple celebrated their one year anniversary in summer 2016, a celebration which they chose to keep low key, according to People. Theroux took a break from filming his hit HBO show The Leftovers in Australia to spend a week with his wife in Los Angeles where the two reportedly celebrated with a few close friends at home. While it's hard to imagine that this seemingly flawless couple could possibly have any strange skeletons in the closet, it seems that that's actually far from the truth. According to several sources, Aniston and Theroux have a few strict rules and strange quirks that keep things interesting and help to ensure the success of their marriage.

They were engaged for three years

When Theroux popped the question in 2012 after just 15 months of dating, most people expected him to walk down the aisle with Aniston just as quickly. It started out this way, as a source told People that just a few months into their engagement they had already picked out their wedding band designs, Aniston's dress was in the works, and that we could expect them to take the plunge that spring. However, 10 months after their engagement was announced, the couple made another announcement. According to People, they had allegedly decided to put things on hold after being overwhelmed with work and not having the time to plan. This resulted in rumors that there was trouble in paradise, and many began to wonder if the couple would ever get married. While some speculated that Theroux was getting cold feet or that he used Aniston to give his career a boost and never planned to marry the Friends star, they couldn't have been more wrong. After a three year-engagement, the two put all rumors to rest and finally tied the knot on August 5, 2015.

Their wedding was far from traditional

When Aniston and Theroux shared their vows, it wasn't quite the over-the-top celebrity spectacle many people expected. The simple ceremony was held in the couple's backyard, and was kept quiet by using Theroux's birthday as a coverup. Both of Aniston's female Friends costars Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox were in attendance, and Cox was even Aniston's maid of honor. Theroux told Good Morning America that Jimmy Kimmel not only officiated the wedding, but even choked up during the ceremony, saying, "It was exactly what you would want him to do. He was extremely funny, kept things extremely light, was extremely touching."

While it's not too strange to have a friend officiate a wedding, the couple also had Howard Stern and Robert Downey Jr. give toasts, which is definitely a bit weird. According to ABC News, Howard Stern poked fun at some of the wedding details on his radio show saying, "There was a table, and then you sit down and the chairs were called poufs, like little pillow poufs." He then complained about not being able to have his cellphone on him by teasing, "I don't want to take a picture of you two! I really don't. I want my cellphone so after I make this speech I can call my car and get ... out of here!" Since there's hardly a photo available of their wedding available for public eyes, it seems like the couple got the privacy they wanted by banning cellphones.

They celebrate their relationship milestones with friends

Most couples celebrate their anniversaries and honeymoons alone with their significant other, shacked up in a bedroom and enjoying some quality time in between the sheets. Theroux and Aniston certainly don't follow that tradition, though. Aside from having spent their first wedding anniversary at home with friends, they had also invited the gang along on their honeymoon. In August of 2015, soon after their top-secret wedding took place at their shared home in Bel Air, the newlyweds headed to Bora Bora for their not-so-private honeymoon.

According to an interview Theroux did with Extra, the couple was accompanied by some of their celebrity friends including Courteney Cox, Chelsea Handler, and Jason Bateman, which is strange to say the least. However, Theroux rationalized their decision in his interview saying, "We had thought about it; we could just do a normal honeymoon, or we could go with some friends, keep the party going, relax, and have fun. It was really special, it was really beautiful." Even though these two are far from being a traditional couple, it certainly sounds like they had a great time.

They make sure to spend time apart

For most couples, finding the time to spend together can be difficult, so making the time becomes a priority. However, it seems Aniston and Theroux might have the opposite problem. A source revealed to OK! magazine that while there certainly isn't trouble in paradise, the couple is sure not to spend too much time together. In fact, they reportedly try not to spend more than four hours together per day, which could limit the movies they go out to see together. The source revealed, "They just enjoy their own space too much. They actually get along better when they're on separate coasts. They flirt by text and love to send each other pictures of their wedding rings." As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder! But sending each other photos of their wedding rings? That's just odd all by itself!

On the bright side, though: sources for People revealed that they never actually spend more than a few weeks apart from one another. Which, in Hollywood terms, is basically just a couple of days.

They often sleep separately

Instead of suffering through the night fighting for blankets and attempting to sleep through their partner's unforgiving snores, Aniston and Theroux instead choose to sleep separately on occasion, according to tabloid reports. A source revealed to OK! Magazine that the couple actually prefers to sleep apart, saying, "Justin likes to read in bed, watch TV, browse the Internet and send emails—often all at the same time. He drives Jen nuts when she's trying to get some sleep." Understandably, that kind of bedroom behavior would drive anyone crazy when they're trying to get some sleep, but it's still on the stranger side. Then again, if Aniston has an early morning appearance to make, the woman certainly needs her beauty sleep!

They eat dinner in the nude

Apparently girl talk isn't private anymore, as one of Aniston's gal pals spilled the beans to Star magazine about how Aniston and Theroux allegedly keep things steamy in the bedroom. According to the source the newlywed couple spice things up by eating dinner in their birthday suits. That's right, they eat naked! The source claims, "She says their sex life is off the charts and that Justin is very adventurous. Their new thing is eating dinner in the nude!" The source fails to explain how exactly eating in the nude is a turn on, but hey, to each their own. At the very least, it certainly sounds like it would be a great way to stay in shape and prevent overeating.

They have a marriage counselor

It seems Aniston's previous marriage to Brad Pitt may have inspired her to be a bit more proactive with her second husband, and their marriage counselor is certainly reaping the benefits. The same source who revealed that Aniston and Theroux enjoy their meals in the buff also told Star magazine that Aniston has a marriage counselor practically on speed dial, costing the couple approximately $5,000 a month. According to the source, "Jen asks for advice on all aspects of the relationship. She knows she has a tendency to be controlling, and having finally gotten Justin to the altar, she doesn't want to drive him away."

This one seems a little far fetched, making it sound like Theroux was practically forced down the aisle on his wedding day. Plus, it's the tabloids; take them for what you will. Still, considering Aniston's relationship history, it would certainly make sense that she seek advice from an objective third party, one she can pay and legally ensure to keep quiet about anything personal. Still, if true, it's strange that they'd need a marriage counselor just one year after exchanging vows!

They have some strange "collectibles"

More Theroux's collection than Aniston's as she refuses to let him bring these random objects anywhere near their shared home, it sure does say a lot about Theroux's personality and their relationship. He keeps his odd collectables in his Greenwich Village three bedroom that now serves as his east coast office. Some examples of the strange objects he has lying around were revealed in an interview he did with GQ, a collection he said he loves but "couldn't sell for ten cents at a flea market."

His collection includes an antique glass medical syringe, wooden tongue depressors decorated with googly eyes and furry beards, a photo of a man with reinforcement steel through his head after a car accident (seemingly still alive), and a candy dish full of human teeth. To that last item he said, "I know a dentist who saves those for me. People often think they're little mints. 'Don't eat the teeth!'"

While these might not seem too bad, the collection continues in his Los Angeles office where he keeps his diseased throats made of wax. No, this is not a joke. "I have these beautiful wax-museum pieces—handmade, from the 1800s—from a museum of curiosities. They're just these open mouths, with tongues, and in the throats are different stages, labeled, of syphilis and gonorrhea and whatever. Those definitely found a great place in my office in L.A. They weren't going to be above the fireplace anytime soon." Definitely can't blame Aniston for that one.

They 17 have pet chickens

Yes, that's 17 chickens! It seems that when Aniston and Theroux were in the market for a new house, the Bel Air home they still share practically came with an entire farm. Well, maybe not a farm, but a chicken coop. There were only six chickens when the couple first bought the place, but their farm family has certainly grown over time. Theroux divulged how the pair acquired the chickens in his GQ interview, saying, "We inherited the chickens from the previous owners. They were like, 'Of course we'll get rid of the chickens,' and we said, 'Are you crazy? Don't get rid of the chickens. That's half the reason we wanted this place.'"

Aniston spoke about their pets again just two years later with People, and that was all the time it took for their livestock population to nearly triple. The couple even got their own his and hers chicks as an adorable gift! When asked what the two do with presumably so many eggs, Aniston replied, "We use the eggs every day. We make frittatas, carbonara. Justin makes great pasta. I use the eggs in my salad or for snacks. They taste delicious!" Who knows how many chickens they have clucking around in their yard these days!

Aniston is still connected to their ex...

No one is linked to their ex in the media more often than Aniston, as every time a story about her ex-husband Pitt surfaces, her name manages to make its way into the press. This has never been more apparent since Pitt announced his split from wife and longtime partner Angelina Jolie, and the media seems to be desperate to know how Aniston feels about the whole debacle. While Aniston hasn't said much about her ex's split, that certainly doesn't mean the media has given up on trying to drag a statement out of her, hounding the Friends star every chance they get. Theroux adorably came to his wife's defense in an 2016 interview with Sunday Times magazine, saying, "She has lived through a lot of bullsh**. Many people would have crumbled under some of the stresses that have been put on her. I'm very proud of her for that, for the way she handles herself."

And as far as what Aniston feels about the end of Brangelina? BFF Chelsea Handler said it best in an interview with Grazia Daily when she said, "It's so stupid and pathetic. As if Jen cares – she doesn't care. It's ridiculous that people still drag her into this. Hello, as if she is sitting around even caring about this."

...And so is Theroux

Aniston isn't the only one in the marriage still being dragged into an ex's drama in the media. Husband Theroux, AKA Mr. Jennifer Aniston, was with celebrity stylist Heidi Bivens for 14 years prior to his relationship with Aniston, and the media just can't seem to get over how they split. While the timeline is iffy at best, some believe that Theroux and Aniston began their love affair while Theroux was still in a relationship with Bivens.

The timeline begins when the two first met. Many believe that the couple met on the set of Wanderlust, as they both appeared in the film; however they actually met several years earlier in 2007 on the set of Tropic Thunder according to US Weekly. Theroux co-wrote the movie and Aniston hung out with the cast every now and then as she was good friends with her Along Came Polly co-star, Ben Stiller, according to reports. While the two certainly didn't hit it off right away, they reconnected on the set of Wanderlust in 2010. It was during filming that rumors began to circulate that a romance was budding between the two, leaving Theroux's long-time girlfriend behind. In fact, some tabloids like the Daily Mail referred to Aniston as a "homewrecker," and even compared the start of their relationship to the way Brad Pitt got together with Angelina Jolie.

The media continues to stir up old drama between Theroux and his ex, even claiming Theroux was talking to Bivens regularly and that Aniston was devastated after catching the two together. These rumors hit tabloids as the couple was on their honeymoon.

Of course, given the media is still obsessed with Pitt and Aniston, it's unlikely that rumors about Aniston's marriage to Theroux will stop anytime soon. On the bright side: at least the two can be comforted by the fact that they have finally found the person they were meant to be with.
