The Real Meaning Behind 'Quicksand' By Morray

The beauty of music is that it constantly evolves over time. In genres such as hip-hop and rap, there is a clear difference in how artists sound today compared to the sound of the early 1970s. Artists such as Lil Baby, Polo G, Toosii, and Young Thug have paved the way to make space for melodic rap songs. Although some may not be able to hold a tune sans auto tune, rappers are still successful in making catchy tunes. If you're into melodic rap, Morray just might be your go-to guy.

The Fayetteville native is heating up the charts with his 2020 single, "Quicksand." The song achieved commercial success a year after its release (thanks to social media), garnering over 15 million views on YouTube. Morray's breakout single not only landed him a spot on the Billboard charts, but he would receive a co-sign from fellow North Carolina rapper J. Cole. Keep scrolling to find out the real meaning behind Morray's breakout track.

Morray uses 'Quicksand' as a metaphor for his hardships

The old saying goes, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." For Morray, life isn't handing him lemons — instead, the rapper compares his life struggles to quicksand. As the rapper explained to Genius, "'Quicksand' is a terminology that we all can relate to. We all go through things in life where you feel like you may be sinking at your lowest point, or you may be at a level where you probably can't get out of. ... I'm out of it now, I smile every day because I know what that quicksand is really like."

In the song's hook, Morray reminisces on being at a low point in his life previously. He raps: "Since a jit stood tall with a kickstand/ Thinking of a plan to get quick bands/ Falling in deep with the quicksand/ Flag out my a**, no quick brand."

Cut to the song's first verse, the rapper recalls being unable to afford new clothes, often having no choice but to wear jeans with broken seams. He also recalls having dreams of becoming rich, which he successfully manages to do. Morray says, "Back in the day, man a n***a had rip jeans/ Couldn't afford a new pair, I had broke seams/ Couldn't think about the money, I had broke dreams." Despite our hard times, Morray reminds us to keep grinding daily to avoid being submerged in the quicksand. Clearly, the rapper should add "motivational speaker" to his resume.
