Celebs Who Dissed Their Own Kids
Generally speaking, there are one or two people in the world who are supposed to think you are flawless: your parents. They lift you up when you are at your lowest low. You count on them to make you feel like you have some redeeming qualities, even when you have erred or have screwed up royally. So when either or both of your parents diss you, your looks, or your character, it's like a knife straight to the heart. These celebs actually dissed their own offspring in mean and hopefully unintentional ways.
Rosie O'Donnell
This is quite a complex relationship that continues to publicly. When Rosie O'Donnell's adopted teen daughter Chelsea went missing during the summer of 2015, the TV host's team put out a statement begging for help, claiming that the girl was at-risk and mentally ill. After being located and then moving out, Chelsea shot back at her mother in a Daily Mail interview, criticizing O'Donnell's parenting skills and calling her a fake. She was most upset about O'Donnell labeling her as sick, thus stigmatizing her. "Putting out there that I am mentally ill was really hurtful," Chelsea shot back. "People think I'm this crazy person and as I've said, I have depression and bad anxiety—but it's been something that's gotten a lot better. I wouldn't say I'm mentally ill—I would say lots of people struggle with what I have." While O'Donnell was likely very concerned about Chelsea and used powerful language to make a point in the public statement, Chelsea felt it was a hurtful diss...understandably so.
Kris Jenner
In her February 2013 Cosmo UK cover story, Khloe Kardashian made a major reveal. She overheard her mother Kris Jenner telling a friend that Koko needed to get a nose job. Kardashian defended her mother, saying, "She didn't mean harm, but when I was around nine, I overheard my mom telling her friend I needed a nose job. I was shocked; I hadn't even thought about it." Well, duh! No child who's single digits in age should be thinking about rhinoplasty or plastic surgery of any kind. This isn't a case where mother "nose" best. What a damaging and careless comment for Kris to make, since it stuck with Kardashian for decades. Big ups to Khloe for keeping her nose as is, though.
Alec Baldwin
The actor and his ex-wife Kim Basinger engaged in an epic and vicious custody battle over their only daughter Ireland. Baldwin has even written books about paternal struggles. But when a nasty voicemail he left for Ireland in 2007 was leaked, it was legitimately damaging and he became the butt of many jokes. Furious at his daughter for neglecting to return a phone call, he barked, "You are a rude, thoughtless little pig. You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being. I don't give a damn that you're 12 years old, or 11 years old, or that you're a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care about what you do as far as I'm concerned. Once again, I have made an ass of myself trying to get to a phone. You have humiliated me for the last time with this phone." Ouch! While Baldwin's contentious battle with Basinger lead to his rage, he was way out of line. He even accused Basinger of leaking the audio. Thankfully, he and Ireland have since repaired their relationship.
Angelina Jolie
Shiloh Pitt is Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's first born. She hit the genetic jackpot with that DNA. She was also born into a life of privilege based on her parents and their fame and fortune. The do-gooder actress has adopted children from poor countries and even drew a line in the sand between them and her first biological child. Jolie told ELLE UK in 2007, "I think I feel so much more for Madd and Zee because they're survivors, they came through so much. In some way, they're strangers because they had this life before me. Shiloh seemed so privileged from the moment she was born, I have less inclination to feel for her. I have to do the opposite from what I expected! I met my other kids when they were six months; they came with a personality." Those statements about Shiloh vs. her adopted children were criticized, since they suggested Jolie didn't have maternal feelings for her own flesh and blood. Jolie's further comments in the feature were less publicized. She actually qualified things and demonstrated her general "mama bear" nature, saying, "But, yes I'm conscious that I have to make sure I don't ignore her needs, just because I think the others are more vulnerable." In that context, her "less inclined to feel" comments make much more sense.
Ryan O'Neal
The famously dysfunctional O'Neal family never fails to outdo itself. At Farrah Fawcett's 2009 funeral, her longtime partner Ryan O'Neal didn't even recognize his Oscar-winning daughter Tatum O'Neal, who has battled serious drug problems most of her life and with whom he has a seriously fractured relationship. But wait—there's more. O'Neal admitted that he actually hit on his daughter since he didn't know it was her. That's creepy and icky, but we're not sure what's worse: that he hit on his own daughter since he didn't realize it was her or that he was hitting on someone at his longtime lover's funeral. He couldn't let Fawcett rest in peace, huh? "I had just put the casket in the hearse and I was watching it drive away when a beautiful blonde woman comes up and embraces me," O'Neall told Vanity Fair. "I said to her, 'You have a drink on you? You have a car?' She said, 'Daddy, it's me—Tatum!' I was just trying to be funny with a strange Swedish woman, and it's my daughter. It's so sick." We can't tell if this was a joke or not. Either way, it was in poor taste and is more of insult to his child and the late Fawcett than anything.
Courtney Love
The grunge goddess has always had a troubled relationship with daughter Frances Bean Cobain. From the infamous Vanity Fair article that intimated that Love used heroin while Cobain was in utero to Cobain's legal emancipation as a teen, the mother-daughter dynamic has always been fraught with drama. Cobain got married earlier this year and Love did not attend the ceremony. In fact, the singer and actress posted an Instagram photo, writing: "If you think I'm sorry for being a no-show at any important events this week, think again." Was that a slap in her daughter's face? Did she decline the RSVP? Or did FBC not even bother to invite her mother? You never can tell with those two. Also, the fact that Love admits in the Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck documentary that she used heroin once while pregnant is way worse of a diss of her child. You just don't do that.
Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani has admitted that she struggled with reconciling her two identities, which are mother and celebrity-slash-pop-singer. It ended up being an indirect diss of her role as mom to her three really cute and stylish sons Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo. She told InStyle, "In the beginning, I didn't want to think of myself as a mother. I was like, 'Wait a minute! Ain't no hollaback girl is who I am!' I had to learn to accept it." She further qualified the statement, saying, "Being a mother and having a career—those are just different roles you play. You're still the same person you were before, but now you're more because you're a mother, too, with a lot to do." Ah, that makes more sense. But her earlier declaration still felt like a diss to her kids.
