Kevin Spacey To Host 2017 Tony Awards
It's official! Actor Kevin Spacey will host the 71st Annual Tony Awards.
"I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year's Tony Awards," Spacey joked in a press release (via E! News). "I think my career is definitely going in the right direction."
While Spacey's probably best known for his work in film and television, starring in projects such as Se7en (1995) and House of Cards (2013-), he's no stranger to the stage. In fact, in 1991, he won his very own Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his work in Lost in Yonkers. Spacey, 57, was also nominated in 1999 for Best Lead Actor in Play for his role in The Iceman Cometh.
Entertainment Weekly notes that Spacey also served as the Artistic Director of The Old Vic Theatre Company in London for over 10 years. He's also performed in Long Day's Journey into Night on Broadway.
Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin and American Theatre Wing President Heather Hitchens expressed their excitement in a statement obtained by EW. "We are thrilled to have Kevin, who has mastered the Broadway stage, the big and small screens and the West End, host this year's Tony Awards," they said. "His spirit and passion for live theatre makes him the perfect host, and we can't wait to see the energy he brings to Radio City on Tony night!"
Unfortunately for Spacey fans, we'll have to wait a bit longer to see the actor hit the award stage. The 2017 Tony Awards will take place on June 11, 2017 at Radio City Music Hall. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Jane Krakowski and Christopher Jackson of Hamilton fame will announce award nominations on May 2, 2017.
