Stranger Things Star Reveals She Is Bisexual
Shannon Purser, one of the breakout stars of the Netflix hit Stranger Things (2016-), has come out as bisexual.
"I don't normally do this, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get personal. I've only just recently come out as bisexual to my family and friends. It's something I am still processing and trying to understand and I don't like talking about it too much," Purser wrote in part of a larger message that she tweeted.
According to US Weekly, Purser was replying to a now-deleted controversial tweet in which she was accused of "queerbaiting," which according to Urban Dictionary is "when a politician, pundit, or other public figure brings up the completely irrelevant detail about a person's sexuality, true or untrue, as a way of subtly channeling homophobia to attack them."
Purser also stressed that she was not even aware of the term "queerbaiting," and apologized to anyone she may have offended. Her admission also served to clarify her comments from last week in which Purser was openly pondering her sexuality and encouraging fans to do the same.
In a string of tweets, she wrote:
"Getting comfortable with your sexuality is a process. It's going to be ok. I wish I'd known that sooner."
"Another thing I wish I'd known about sexuality is to take it slow. It can define you as much as you want it to."
"But it's gonna be ok. You're going to be ok. No, you're going to be great."
"All that to say, you're not alone. You're in my prayers and, if you're the praying kind, please keep me in yours."
Purser now stars on the CW's adaptation of the Archie comic, Riverdale (2017-), as Ethel Muggs. Speaking with EW, Purser revealed what drew her to the character.
"The only tease I have so far is that she is a very dependable and resilient human being and she sees the best in other people. Even when others don't. That's really what makes her unique. While all this chaos is going on with her friends, she knows who she is and she's not afraid."
Sounds like a good fit.
