Amy Adams' Natural Hair Color Isn't What You Would Expect

Amy Adams is famous for both her on-screen talents and her camera-worthy good looks. And one of the actor's hallmarks is her gorgeous fiery red hair. But believe it or not, the six-time Academy Award nominee didn't always have the same kind of strands she has today.

First, there was the hair mistake she made as a teen. "I got a perm at one point because I wanted to look like Kelly McGillis in 'Top Gun.' I didn't," Adams admitted while opening up to Allure back in 2016. Explaining that she thought "somehow a perm would transform [her] into a very sexy, tall, powerful, broad-shouldered woman," she recalled that, instead, she "was like four-foot-nine, flat-chested, and 89 pounds at 14." She was still probably ridiculously cute, though.

While getting a perm might not have been the best decision that Adams has ever made when it comes to her hair, she did make another choice about her now-famous (and seriously enviable!) mane — she changed her natural hair color. That's right: It turns out that Adams' hair isn't naturally red! Read on to find out the true shade of her strands when they're left untouched.

Amy Adams is naturally blond

Amy Adams has rocked various shades of red hair. She looks amazing with a lighter tone that boasts a slight strawberry blush — and she can also totally pull off a deeper, darker shade of fiery copper. However, despite the fact that Adams seems to have been born to be crowned with a red mane, it turns out that she's naturally blond, according to Page Six.

In fact, in May — after many had been off of work and leaning into a more at-home, natural (and sometimes unrecognizable) styles for months due to the coronavirus pandemic — Adams took to Instagram to post a video bringing attention to Foster Care Awareness month (she's an ambassador for The RightWay Foundation, which helps youth who have been in foster care find stable employment). What fans might have also noticed is that the star's hair seemed to be in a more natural state. By that, we mean that it looked to have simple, relatively untouched waves — and, moreover, didn't seem to be dyed. Which means it was lighter and blonder than we're used to seeing on the movie star.

Of course, Adams isn't the only celebrity who dyes their hair red. In fact, many Hollywood stars also known for their cherry locks, weren't born as gingers either.

What stars are natural redheads and which aren't?

If you were surprised to find out that Amy Adams is a famous redhead whose hair isn't naturally red, then you might also be shocked to find out who else uses a few products here and there to make their hair brassier (and sassier) than it would be on its own. But can you guess who that might be?

Well, it turns out that Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, and Cynthia Nixon are all celebrities who don't have naturally red hair — despite being known for their strawberry locks. Surprisingly, the same also goes for Bella Thorne and "Mad Men" icon Christina Hendricks, according to Allure. And, perhaps most shockingly, the legendary Lucille Ball used a henna rinse to turn her naturally brunette hair the iconic shade of red she will forever be known for.

As for celebrities who do naturally have red hair, Insider notes that list includes Lindsay Lohan, Catherine O'Hara, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ewan McGregor — as well Nicole Kidman, who will be playing the (dyed) redheaded Lucille Ball in "Being the Ricardos."
