Strange Hollywood love triangles no one knew about

Love triangles are rarely kept a secret in Hollywood, but there are a few that flew way under the public's radar. In fact, we bet you didn't know about any of these alleged steamy situations when they were actually happening.

Hilary Duff, Aaron Carter, and Lindsay Lohan

Preteen screen queens were all the rage in the early aughts, and Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan were among the biggest names of the sensational generation. Duff was both a small screen star and a radio regular, while Lohan was quickly working her way up the Hollywood movie ladder, but things got messy for both young women when it came to Nick Carter.

Carter, who'd starred with Duff in her Disney show LIzzie McGuire, had been dating the actress for nearly two years when he decided to ditch her for Lohan. Carter was 13 at the time, to be fair, but admitted to stepping out on his then-girlfriend out of sheer boredom. He and Duff later rekindled their romance but ultimately broke up again. Carter reportedly tweeted his continued affections for Duff, but she dismissed the viral comments and said she and Lohan are "fine now."

Miley Cyrus, Nick Jonas, and Selena Gomez

The history of Disney stars dating has always been a bit complicated, but never more so than when it came to the Jonas Brothers and their high-profile hookups. Nick Jonas' long-time friend and touring partner Demi Lovato shed a little light on his muddied history during their joint session of Carpool Karaoke when she joked that he had flings with "Miley [Cyrus], then Selena [Gomez], then back with Miley, then back with Selena."

Lovato's comment echoed the long-whispered gossip that Jonas had gone back and forth between both pop stars, and music video director Brett Ratner confirmed Cyrus' scathing "7 Things" was about him. Gomez herself refuted rumors that she and Cyrus were ever engaged in a full-on feud, saying "We liked the same guy when we were 16." She even compared the situation to what Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan went through over Aaron Carter around the same time.

Angelina Jolie, Billy Bob Thornton, and Laura Dern

Everyone knows about the legendary love triangle of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, but before that, the actress was at the center of another Hollywood breakup. When Jolie and her second husband Billy Bob Thornton first got together, he'd been dating actress Laura Dern at the time and she was surprised to discover her beau got wed behind her back.

As Dern once explained the drama, "I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I've never heard from him again." Thornton himself has admitted that the press attention that followed their "whirlwind" romance "had some basis in fact." Jolie and Thornton divorced in 2003, reportedly due to his disinterest in having more children, despite their joint announcement of adopting of her first son Maddox from Cambodia. Jolie received full custody of the child, and he was eventually adopted by Brad Pitt, with whom she now has six kids.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Caitlin Cronenberg

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart may have found immortal love onscreen in The Twilight Saga, but their behind-the-scenes story was a little more human. Most people know about the time she stepped out on Pattinson with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders (mostly because they were photographed mid-smooch by the paparazzi), but some of Pattinson's own potential dalliances were made a little less mainstream.

Pattinson was reportedly linked to Cosmopolis director David Cronenberg's daughter Caitlin Cronenberg during production on the film in Toronto in 2011, while he was still said to be dating Stewart. Although the rumors of their connection were immediately denied, Pattinson was again linked to the photographer in 2014. Photo evidence of the couple with locked lips supported the story the second time, during production on Maps to the Stars, his second professional pairing with her dad. He and Stewart were long broken up by then, though.

Chanel Iman, A$AP Rocky, and Rihanna

The rap scene was abuzz when hip-hop star A$AP Rocky was rumored to have stepped out on Victoria's Secret model Chanel Iman for his Diamonds tour partner Rihanna in 2013, but the lyric-slinger vehemently denied having any hookups with her (and has since stuck to his story that their relationship has been purely platonic all along). However, he and Iman called off their engagement in 2015 after, he admitted, he realized "she deserves better than me." Though he's never admitted to Rihanna's involvement in the breakdown of his marriage-to-be, he was spotted kissing her on the set of their music video together for her song "Work," and the lip-locking was reportedly not just for the cameras.

Beyonce, Jay Z, and Lyndall Locke

Forget about the saga of Becky with the Good Hair. Let's talk about Lyndall Locke, who's perhaps better known as Beyonce Knowles' ex. Locke, whom she dated throughout her adolescence, has never made any bones about the fact that he regretted losing "the love of [his] life" to Shawn "Jay Z" Carter, but he reportedly had been more involved in the married couple's early life than they let on.

In a biographical tell-all book, celeb writer J. Randy Taraborrelli revealed that even when Carter began courting Knowles back in their earliest days in 2001, she was still not completely done with Locke. Even his mother contributed to the story by saying "there was a lot of grey area" in the timeline between the start of Knowles' relationship with Carter and the end of her sweetheart status with Locke. Indeed, Locke himself acknowledged that he was only "edged out" once Carter came into the picture.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and Jamie Foxx

Katie Holmes has kept her romantic relationship with actor Jamie Foxx on the down low for years, and many speculate that all the secrecy shrouding has a little something to do with who she was once married to: Tom Cruise. Foxx and Cruise, of course, were co-stars in the 2004 action film Collateral, and they'd remained friends for years, even after Holmes called it quits with the actor and moved their daughter out of their home in 2012.

Holmes and Foxx were reportedly linked shortly after the publicized split, although they both publicly denied their relationship as anything but friendly until 2016 when a friend of Foxx's confirmed that Foxx was indeed seeing her and that they were "very happy" together. She later withdrew her comments, but her retraction only played into the narrative that the couple were simply keeping things under extreme cover but were very much a thing.

Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, and Kendall Jenner

The storied breakup of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez has had plenty of wrinkles right there on the surface, but one fold that's been a little less explored than others is the hand model-slash-reality TV star Kendall Jenner might have played in the game. Reportedly, Jenner and Bieber were spotted cozying up to one another in Paris—the city of love, of all places, which was the straw that both the back when it came to Gomez, with whom he was living at the time.

Although Bieber would later claim his 2014 split with Gomez was due to them being too young and too wrapped up in each other—"My identity was in her, her identity was in me, when stuff would happen ... we would fight so hard because we were so invested in each other," he told Complex Magazine—a lot of people suspect he may have stepped out on her with Jenner near the end.

Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, and Niall Horan

Another instance of sketchy timelines in the musician love scene happened between Ellie Goulding, One Directioner Niall Horan, and Ed Sheeran. Goulding, who'd risen to ubiquity thanks to her 2014 smash song "Love Me Like You Do," was rumored to have cheated on the "Thinking Out Loud" crooner with the British boybander that year. The lyrics to his lover scorned lament "Don't" certainly supported the chatter.

However, in an interview with Seventeen, Goulding admitted that she and Horan "went on a few dates" and are still friends but that, despite having been photographed holding hands with Sheeran at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, she was never in a relationship with Sheeran in the first place. Sheeran, however, has indicated he had a different take on things. He once said that "it was going on" between them at the time, "and now it's not." He also later admitted that he "got over the anger" at his "singer ex" as soon as he wrote the bitter breakup anthem.

David Spade, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Jack Nicholson

Comedian David Spade claims that Jack Nicholson stole his then-girlfriend, Lara Flynn Boyle, in 1999. Spade, who'd been dating Boyle for a year, told Details, "Nicholson asked Lara Flynn Boyle out in front of me, while we were all smoking a doob somewhere. She got mad because I didn't stick up for her. I said, 'I've been in this town long enough to know when I'm outranked. You're either gonna go out with him or you're not,'" he recalled. "She goes, 'No way. He's worse than Trump!'" But it turns out maybe Trump wasn't so bad in her eyes: The National Enquirer called Spade a few weeks later, asking him for comment on Boyle and Nicholson getting into a car crash—at which point Boyle reportedly "crawled out of the sunroof and yelled, 'I have a boyfriend! I can't be here!'"

January Jones, Bobby Flay, and Stephanie March

Back in 2010, January Jones somehow managed to hit three parked cars after a night of watching sports. Instead of calling a pal or the police for help, Jones called celebrity chef Bobby Flay, who arrived on the scene, chatted her up a bit, then left. No one could figure out why. That is, until May 2015, when Flay's wife, Stephanie March, filed for divorce. InTouch reports that in her paperwork, March alleged that had an ongoing affair with Jones throughout 2010, even accusing him of being the mysterious father of Jones' son, Xander, who was born in 2011.

J.C. Chasez, Eva Longoria, and Tony Parker

Eva Longoria loves playing the heartbroken victim of her breakup from philandering ex-husband Tony Parker, with whom she split in 2011. What she doesn't always mention is that she actually first hooked up with Parker in 2004 while she was publicly dating a famous NSYNC singer. No, not that one. That other NSYNC singer: J.C. Chasez. What goes around comes around, but sometimes it takes about seven years.

John Mayer, Giada de Laurentiis, and Todd Thompson

Food Network babe Giada de Laurentiis filed for divorce from husband Todd Thompson in December 2014, but the news wasn't that shocking to some. De Laurentiis had been rumored to be involved in a torrid affair with none other than John Mayer since 2009. Star reported that Mayer was the prime source of de Laurentiis' split, despite her adamantly denying an affair ever happened. For his part, this was the one female conquest Mayer kept quiet about.

Michelle Trachtenberg, Ashlee Simpson, and Pete Wentz

Michelle Trachtenberg and Pete Wentz dated briefly before Wentz married Ashlee Simpson in a 2008 shotgun wedding. In 2009, however, Simpson revealed that she and Wentz were hooking up while he was dating Trachtenberg...directly to Trachtenberg herself. MTV News reports that an allegedly wasted Simpson approached Trachtenberg at a party in June 2009, screaming, "I hope you know, the whole time you were dating Pete, I was f***ing him!" Oof. Looks like all the class in the Simpson family went to big sis Jessica. Wait, maybe not...

Adam Levine, Jessica Simpson, and Nick Lachey

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson were pop and reality TV's golden couple. That is, until Simpson got a taste for a more successful musician. Us Weekly reports that Simpson hooked up with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine in 2004 during a booze-fueled romp at the notorious Chateau Marmont...while she was still married to Lachey. Before she and Lachey divorced in 2006, Simpson was also linked to Bam Margera and Dane Cook.

Lil' Wayne, Tammy Torres, and Drake

Lil Wayne had a falling out with his protege, Drake, over a love triangle involving Weezy's then-girlfriend, Tammy Torres, while Wayne was in prison. In March 2015, TMZ obtained a copy of a book outline Wayne sent to publishers detailing the experience. The Young Money rapper claims that Drake visited him in prison and warned him not to get involved with Torres, admitting that he'd had an affair with the stunner. Wayne was devastated, eloquently writing, "I woke up feeling f***ed up about the f***ed up day that I had...finding out that she f***ed Drake was the absolute worst thing I could've ever found out...as a man, honestly, that s*** hurt...and not because it was Drake, it could have been any man. It would've hurt just the same." Of course, Drizzy is no stranger to love triangle—he and Chris Brown have beefed over his hookups with both Rihanna and Karrueche Tran in the past.

Olivia Munn, Justin Timberlake, and Jessica Biel

Everyone forgets that while Justin Timberlake is, indeed, a modern-day renaissance man, he's also got the nickname "Trouser Snake" for a reason beyond the rhyme. Us Weekly reports that in September 2010, Timberlake swore up and down to Olivia Munn that he and then-girlfriend Jessica Biel were donezo, and Munn believed him—leading to a three-day fling. Problem was, Timberlake was still with Biel at the time and just lied to Munn to get her to do the deed. When the news broke about a month later, he and Biel temporarily split, but eventually reunited and tied the knot in October 2012. Hooray?

Jay Z, Aaliyah, and Damon Dash

The late songbird Aaliyah was rumored to be the woman who broke up Roc-A-Fella's partnership between Jay Z and Damon Dash. Dash dated Aaliyah for a year before her untimely death in 2001, but admits that he may have infringed on Hova's territory. He told Hip-Hop Motivation, "I was going at her, but Jay was going at her. And he knew her before I did...It was just a situation where Aaliyah was the type of girl that would give you a shot. She didn't care what people thought or whatever. So, she'll date you and be your friend."

Kristen Stewart, Soko, and Alicia Cargill

After Kristen Stewart first broke free of the Twilight zone and ended her relationship with co-star Robert Pattinson, she took up with former assistant Alicia Cargile. During a time out from that romance, though, she was connected with French actress Stephanie "Soko" Sokolinski, and the two were spotted in more than one public display of affection.

In May 2016, Stewart and Sokolinski officially broke up for reasons unspecified, but Stewart's ex seemed to put the truth of their ended tryst on the table when she tweeted (and deleted) the not-so-cryptic message, "CHEATER. F***ing CHEATER." Soon after, Stewart brought Cargile as her date to Cannes Film Festival—which, awkwardly enough, Sokolinski also attended. Stewart wasn't shy about the seriousness of her questionably-timed reunion with Cargile, either. She told New York Times's T Magazine, "Look how cute she is. I love her so much."

Britney Spears, Kevin Federline, and Shar Jackson

Before the world came to know Kevin Federline as "K-Fed," the back-up dancer who became Mr. Britney Spears and fathered her two sons, he was in a very serious relationship with actress Shar Jackson. In fact, the two were engaged and expecting their second child when he broke things off with Jackson in favor of Spears. Federline later publicly apologized for breaking up his then-growing family with Jackson in an emotional 2010 episode of Celebrity Fit Club.

The love triangle became something of a square, though, two years later when Jackson was reportedly linked to Spears' first ex-husband, Jason Alexander. Spears and Alexander were infamously married for a mere 55 hours in 2004, in the Las Vegas elopement heard 'round the pop world. Jackson and Alexander later called it quits, and Alexander was arrested for assault in 2015 for "great bodily injury" to his new, unnamed flame.

Cameron Diaz, Alex Rodriguez, and Kate Hudson

Actress Kate Hudson and New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez broke off their short-lived relationship in 2010 because, she claimed, he was not over his ex-girlfriend Madonna. It didn't take long, though, for another regular rom-com blonde to step up to the girlfriend plate. Cameron Diaz started dating Rodriguez shortly after he and Hudson split, and it was frenzied fodder for the tabloid circuit because Hudson had reportedly hooked up with Diaz's ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake very shortly after their separation a few years before.

The feud didn't last long, though. In 2012, once the ladies had both put the slugger in their rearview, they were spotted chumming it up at the Academy Awards and have since been known to attend various social events together and count many mutual friends between them. Diaz even referred to Hudson as one of her "good friends" in 2013 interview.

Ariana Grande, Jai Brooks, and Nathan Sykes

Arianators might have had more to say about Ariana Grande's split with rapper Big Sean, but before that, there was another Grande romance that went spectacularly south. The pop star had been dating Australian comedian Jai Brooks but stepped out on her then-boyfriend for singer-songwriter Nathan Sykes of the Wanted.

In a lengthy Twitter post, Brooks detailed the heartbreak he was experiencing over being left for the British singer, writing, "Nathan may be a top bloke or a sweet person, but what he did was just wrong. He interfered with my life and did not respect my relationship." Grande herself responded on her own feed by writing, "I'm finally happy. Words can't hurt me anymore. It's always ok to defend yourself. My fans know what kind of person I am." Grande and Sykes, who ultimately dated for a few months in 2013, later dueted on the song "Over and Over Again."

Joe Jonas, Taylor Swift, and Camilla Belle

If there's anyone who isn't afraid to make her personal grievances known, it's Taylor Swift. The singer-songwriter openly declared that the reason she and Joe Jonas ended their teen fling back in 2009 is that he found someone new in actress Camilla Belle. Swift once said, "they've been together since we broke up. That's why we broke up—because he met her."

Swift reportedly wrote the song "Better than Revenge" about the actress, and although it took several years to come to gossipy fruition, Belle finally found an opportunity to use Swift's own words against her when she tweeted a quote that said, "No need for revenge. Just sit back and wait. Those who hurt you will eventually screw up themselves." The message came just after Swift's feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West hit a fever pitch and Kardashian released a bit of audio contradicting Swift's story about being gobsmacked by West's references to her in his "Famous," so many viewed it as a reference to her own tiff with Swift.

Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus, and January Jones

Before The Hunger Games hunk called it quits with his then-fiancée and former The Last Song co-star Miley Cyrus, he was reportedly something of a mad man in pursuit of actress January Jones. Although Jones' rep denied she had any part in the ending of Cyrus and Hemsworth's longtime relationship, the fact that the two were spotted leaving an Oscars party together and he was reportedly "sexting" her shortly before the pair's breakup announcement certainly raised some eyebrows.

It's not the first time Jones has been in the middle of such a mess, either. She was also accused of sharing a bed with X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn, and celebrity chef Bobby Flay's ex-wife Stephanie March claimed he and the actress carried on an illicit relationship during their marriage. Jones has also never revealed the identity of her son Xander Dane Jones' father. Cyrus and Hemsworth resumed their relationship in early 2016.
