Jon Hamm Gets Candid About 2015 Rehab Stint

Jon Hamm's time in rehab allowed him to sort out his life.

The Mad Men actor opened up about seeking treatment for alcohol abuse in March 2015 during an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017. "Recalibrate. Re-evaluate. Just sort of re-establish where you are," he began. "You're coming off of this Tilt-a-Whirl that's going 9,000 miles an hour, and so many things have come unfixed. If you think about navigation, you're trying to stare at a fixed point. When you navigate to something that's whirling, it's difficult. It's all a learning experience."

"It's all about growing older and getting better at living," Hamm, 46, added. "And I hope I did."

As Nicki Swift previously reported, the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor was "in good spirits" after completing the 30-day program with the support of his partner, Jennifer Westfeldt, 47. But according to Us Weekly, rumors of a breakup surrounded the couple at the time. "The only gentleman Jennifer visited regularly in Connecticut was Jon, while he was in rehab," Hamm's rep said in a statement. "They continue to ask for the public's understanding and sensitivity during this challenging time."

The couple sadly split five months later in September 2015. "With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history," they released in a joint statement. "We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward."

It was difficult at the time for fans to ignore the parallels between Hamm's highly publicized personal struggles with addiction and his broken relationship, and his famous portrayal of the hard-drinking, womanizing Don Draper on Mad Men. "Obviously, there can be a lot of discussion about how much of this is related to that," the Baby Driver actor told Australia's TV Week (via NY Daily News). "And honestly I don't have much to say about that either."

We're just glad Hamm recognized he had a problem and was able to find the help he needed with the support of friends and family. Read up on other celebs who have secretly battled addictions here.
