Inside Demi Lovato's Relationship History

The following article includes references to substance use and mental health issues.

Demi Lovato's dating life has been complicated. The singer-actor's long list of exes includes fellow celebrities, athletes, and more. Lovato has opened up about these past relationships in her music and during interviews, but like many former Disney stars, her dating history has been publicized since her teen years. The ups and downs the musician has experienced in their relationships seems to have taught them a lot, because in 2009, a young but wise Lovato took to Twitter to share: "Love is like death. You anticipate it, but when it happens you were never truly expecting it."

Although Lovato has been in a fair share of relationships, she's also taken time to enjoy the single life. During a 2020 interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," they opened up about getting to know themself during this learning period. "I realized that I am the type of person that will find any way to regulate when I'm sad or lonely or whatever," she told DeGeneres. "I have to fight those battles on my own and I can't let somebody come in and fix those issues for me. So right now, I'm single and spending my Saturday nights by myself." This period of self-discovery may have aided Lovato in building the foundation for a healthy relationship, which she appears to be enjoying these days as she has moved on with boyfriend Jute$, who is also a musician.

Let's take a look inside Demi Lovato's relationship history.

Demi Lovato dated Hannah Montana star Cody Linley

It is not uncommon for Disney Channel stars to fall for each other. Demi Lovato actually dated former "Hannah Montana" star Cody Linley, who is known for his role as Jake Ryan on the sitcom. You might also remember him from other movies and TV shows like "Hoot" (2006), "Melissa & Joey," and "That's So Raven." Lovato and Linley may have been drawn to each other because they had their careers as teen stars in common.

In 2008, Linley spoke to Seventeen about his first date with Lovato, and he revealed that things didn't go as planned. The actor explained that his car broke down, so he picked up his famous date an hour late. Linley told Lovato about his car troubles during the date and the songstress actually gave him advice on how to repair his ride. The date was smooth sailing from there — until Linley's ride back home. "We went to a steak place for dinner," he explained, but the actor went on to reveal that there was one more bump in the road after the date: "I was really worried that my car was going to break down again, and then I got lost on my way home."

Unfortunately, it seems that this was the last the world heard of Linley and Lovato, so it may be safe to say this date didn't lead to a relationship.

Did her age gap with Trace Cyrus end their romance?

Interestingly, Demi Lovato dated another star who is associated with Miley Cyrus. The "Confident" singer was in a relationship with Miley's older brother, Trace Cyrus, in 2009. Trace is famous in his own right and is most well known for being the guitarist in the band Metro Station. We don't hear as much from Trace Cyrus anymore, so it seems that he has stepped away from the spotlight in more recent years, but he wasn't shy about his love for Lovato during her Disney days. The musician often took to Twitter to flirt with the star. "@ddlovato you don't realize how excited I am! My tour manger is bookin my flight now! Your all I've thought about ever since I left town," he once wrote alongside a heart emoticon (via Seventeen).

Although Trace and Lovato seemed to be in love, their relationship was short-lived. While speaking with People, Trace revealed why the romance ended. "Demi is one of my good friends and I definitely became very, very close with her in the past few months, and it's something I really wanted to make work," he explained. "But unfortunately, we both have very busy schedules — we're both on tour right now." The then-20-year-old musician went on to add that their age gap was also a factor in the breakup. "Maybe when she's older and we've both matured, we'll be looking for the same thing and it can work out," Trace said of his then-16-year-old ex.

Exes Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas are still friends

Demi Lovato first confirmed her relationship with Joe Jonas in April 2010. You might recall that the pair were co-stars in Disney Channel's "Camp Rock." During an interview with Teen Vogue published that June, the couple talked about getting to know each other on the set of the film and eventually falling in love. "I had always fancied him," Lovato said of Jonas. "Want to know what actually happened? One night I asked him, 'What is the deal? We're perfect for each other. What are you doing?' And he was like, 'This is really awkward. I have to go.'" The Jonas Brothers frontman then revealed that he needed time to consider whether or not he was ready to take things to the next level with Lovato. The "Sorry Not Sorry" singer helped him explore his emotions. "Once she confronted me, I kind of confronted myself," Jonas said.

According to Teen Vogue, the couple announced they decided to split just days after their interview. The stars both issued separate statements regarding their breakup, and it seems that they were willing to make amends in the future. "When I met Demi, I knew right away that our friendship was really strong. I don't want to lose that ever," Jonas told the outlet after calling it quits. It seems that the former couple did in fact remain friends because Lovato congratulated Jonas on his engagement to Sophie Turner in 2017, per ET.

Their controversial relationship with Wilmer Valderrama

Demi Lovato's relationship with "That '70s Show" actor Wilmer Valderrama was often questioned because of their age gap. According to Us Weekly, Lovato was only 17 when she met Valderrama, who was 29 at the time. The couple dated from 2010 to 2016, and Lovato gushed about her ex-boyfriend even after they parted ways. In the singer's 2017 documentary "Simply Complicated," she recalled the first time she met the actor. "When I met him and I laid eyes on him for the first time, I was in hair and makeup and he came in and sat down and I was like, 'I love this man and I have to have him,'" Lovato said, adding with a laugh, "But I was only 17, and so he was like, 'Get away from me.' After I had turned 18, we began dating." It appears that Lovato didn't see a problem with the age-gap relationship at the time.

In 2022, however, the star's song "29" seemed to hint that they changed their opinion on their romance with Valderrama after turning 29 themself. Lovato opened up about the revelation that led her to write the song during an interview for Apple Music that August. "When I turned 29, I remember I was on vacation and I just realized I'm 29 now, and it put things into perspective," they shared with Zane Lowe. "It put everything into perspective. And I'm very careful with the way that I answer these questions because I feel like the song says it all."

Demi Lovato briefly dated UFC fighter Luke Rockhold

Demi Lovato and UFC fighter Luke Rockhold made their public debut as a couple when they attended a UFC fight in November 2016, per Entertainment Tonight. The duo held hands in front of the paparazzi as they entered the building, so it seemed they were pretty serious. You may be wondering how a former Disney star and a UFC fighter crossed paths. Luckily, Rockhold opened up to Athletes Voice about how he and Lovato met. "I was in the gym and watched her train," he said of the "Heart Attack" singer. The athlete went on to explain what led him to pursue Lovato. "She's passionate," Rockhold said. "She's talented. I took to that and we hung out a bit. Anytime you find someone like that — I appreciate passionate, driven women — it's nice. And at the time, it was fun for me and she's still a nice girl."

Lovato kept quiet about their relationship with Rockhold. However, the couple wasn't shy about their matching smiley face tattoos, and Rockhold shared a photo of his ink on Instagram that August. An anonymous source spoke to Us Weekly about the nature of Lovato's relationship with the UFC star. "She's just trying to have fun right now," the insider alleged. "They've been talking, hanging out and hooking up, and they like each other." By early 2017, TMZ Sports reported that the casual romance had ended.

The singer went Instagram official with Guilherme Vasconcelos

Demi Lovato continued their pattern of dating professional athletes when they linked up with MMA fighter Guilherme Vasconcelos (aka "Bomba") shortly after leaving Luke Rockhold. In January 2017, a source told People, "Demi and Luke broke up before Christmas. It wasn't anything dramatic. The relationship just wasn't heading where she wanted it to go. Luke was really cool about it, and they were on the same page. She's started seeing Bomba again. She's really physically attracted to him."

Lovato's relationship with Vasconcelos was a little less low-key than her previous romance. The couple often displayed their love for one another on social media. In fact, they went public with their fling with a since-deleted Instagram photo shared for New Year's, as reported by People. Lovato later took to Instagram to post a now-deleted clip of her learning jiu-jitsu with the help of her professional athlete boyfriend. The singer briefly opened up about their experience dating an MMA fighter during an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that February. She shared that she feared for Vasconcelos' safety sometimes, but it typically wasn't a concern because he's a pro.

When the duo parted ways in May 2017, an anonymous source alleged that the former lovers were mature about the breakup. "It wasn't a dramatic split," the insider told People. "Bomba is a good guy, but the relationship just ran its course."

Demi Lovato and designer Henry Levy's swift relationship

About a year and a half after Demi Lovato split from Guilherme Vasconcelos, she was spotted dining with fashion designer Henry Levy, who owns the designer fashion brand Enfants Riches Déprimés, in November 2018. Levy and Lovato may have been drawn to each other because of their shared history of substance use and recovery. Just like his superstar ex-girlfriend, Levy has been open about his journey to sobriety.

During an interview with Complex in 2016, the designer shared that he entered rehab for the first time at age 15. "I was, like, a f**k up in high school," he said. "I was caught up in drugs and s**t like that." Levy went on to share that a separate not-so-glamorous rehab stay led him to create his fashion line. "That's when it was on some not-flossy s**t," he recalled. "Like, came out and was sleeping in a bunk bed with a bunch of 50-year-old meth addicts trying to recover. And that's when I started coming up with the idea for the brand."

Although this couple were likely able to bond over their sobriety journeys, their relationship was short-lived. In March 2019, E! News reported that Lovato and Levy had split. An anonymous source alleged that Lovato's family encouraged her to end the relationship so that she could prioritize repairing her mental health.

She and Mike Johnson had a whirlwind romance

Demi Lovato formed a crush on Mike Johnson after watching him compete for love on "The Bachelorette." According to People, she took to her Instagram Stories in July 2019 to share that she seemingly only had eyes for Johnson while watching the show. The musician even wrote: "Mike I accept your rose." Lovato eventually caught the reality TV star's attention and was later reportedly spotted out on a date with her new fling, per E! News. A source claimed to the outlet, "They did go on a date and it's been going well. They seem to have a lot in common and are just enjoying getting to know each other."

While this alleged date was never confirmed, Johnson shared that he was in fact involved with Lovato during a September 2019 interview with E! News shortly after. "I'm just getting to know Demi," he said. "I think she's absolutely fantastic, and I don't want no pressure on her, no pressure on me — we're just trying to get to know each other. That's all." He went on to admit he and the "Cool for the Summer" singer were exclusive. During a separate interview with People at the time, Johnson shared that Lovato made the first move, and he was drawn to her boldness. However, Johnson seemingly confirmed he had moved on Lovato after he got flirty with KeKe Palmer during an appearance on "Strahan, Sara and Keke" in October 2019 (via Access).

Demi Lovato dated model Austin Wilson for a short time

It seems that Demi Lovato wasn't afraid to enter the dating world again after her short relationship with Mike Johnson didn't work out, because the star took to Instagram just two weeks after the split to show off her new fling, per Us Weekly. They shared a since-deleted mirror selfie with model Austin Wilson that revealed their relationship to the world. The outlet speculated that the pair may have developed feelings for each other after the passing of their mutual friend, model Thomas Trussell III. A source alleged that Lovato and Wilson may have also bonded over their shared sobriety journeys. "Demi's friends approve of Austin and they're both great influences on each other," the insider told Us Weekly. "Austin and Demi are both sober and it's easy for them to connect and understand each other."

The couple split in December 2019, just one month after going public with their relationship. Lovato addressed the breakup when she took to Instagram to answer a fan's question. "Please don't go after him," she pleaded (via Us Weekly). "He's a good guy. Much better than what people see on the outside just because he's got a lot of tattoos. Breakups are hard for both parties involved. Just stay nice and say prayers." As reported by People, an anonymous source later claimed that Lovato chose to focus on herself and her career.

Max Ehrich and Demi Lovato called off their engagement

Demi Lovato and former "The Young and the Restless" star Max Ehrich sparked dating rumors after Lovato accidentally made an appearance in the background of one of the actor's Instagram Live streams in March 2020, as captured by Pop Crave. The couple later announced their engagement on Instagram that July, and they appeared to be deeply in love. In a since-deleted post, Lovato wrote in part, "I knew I loved you the moment I met you. It was something I can't describe to anyone who hasn't experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too. I've never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all" (via Glamour).

Unfortunately, the couple's whirlwind relationship was brought into question after it was alleged that Elrich had previously shared a series of tweets about Selena Gomez, who famously grew apart from Lovato after a years-long friendship. Lovato denied that Elrich wrote the flirty tweets, and instead suggested they were edited by fans who hoped for a feud involving Gomez. The musician took to their Instagram Stories to address the drama. "It's really sad when people FAKE images to put women against each other," she wrote in part (via Cosmopolitan). "If women have conflict that's between them NOT YOU."

Still, the couple later split just two months after announcing their engagement. Noting that both reportedly wanted to focus on their work, a source cited by People claimed, "They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together."

Demi Lovato moved on with musician Jute$

It appears that Demi Lovato hasn't given up on finding love yet, because she's moved on with musician Jute$ (real name Jordan Lutes). Unlike many of Lovato's previous relationships, this one has so far been a bit more low-key. As of this writing, we have yet to learn many of the details of their relationship, but we do know that they have quite a few things in common. Like Lovato, Jute$ is committed to remaining sober. In July 2022, the Canadian musician took to Twitter to share that he hit a 100-day milestone in his sobriety journey. The musicians also write songs together, with Jute$ co-writing Lovato's song "Substance," which is one of the singles on her album "Holy Fvck," per ET.

Thankfully, fans got a bit of a peek into this talented couple's relationship when Jute$ shared a heartfelt Instagram post for Lovato's 30th birthday that August. The carousel post featured photos and videos of the duo over the course of their relationship. In the caption, the "Out the Door" singer-songwriter shared in part: "happy birthday baby. ur a 30 year old minx and i'm the luckiest schmuck in the world cuz i get to call u mine. making u laugh has become my new obsession cuz ur smile literally cures my depression (there's a song lyric in there somewhere)."

Lovato has yet to publicly speak on their relationship with the pop-punk songwriter, so fans will have to stay tuned.
