Meghan Markle's Connection To Married... With Children Explained
It's safe to say that former working actor Meghan Markle knows her way around a set. While the royal turned podcast host is perhaps best known for her role as Rachel Zane on the legal drama series "Suits," it's actually another set that Markle used to frequent for more than ten years... and, no, we're not talking about her stint as a briefcase girl on "Deal or No Deal", a gig she later admitted left her feeling "objectified" during the October 18 episode of her "Archetypes" podcast.
As it turns out, Markle spent many of her formative years on the set of "Married... With Children," Fox's longstanding television sitcom. "Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of 'Married... With Children" which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up," Markle told Esquire in 2013 about her unconventional way of passing the time once the school had let out for the day. But what exactly was the youngster's connection to the raunchy comedic sitcom series? The answer just might surprise you...
Meghan Markle's dad worked on Married... With Children
Back when Meghan Markle was growing up, every day was take your daughter to work day on the set of "Married... With Children."
"My dad was a lighting director and director of photography for 'Married... With Children.' He just retired actually last year," Markle revealed in a 2013 interview. Still, Markle said her dad, Thomas Markle, was determined to keep her away from the dark comedic subject matter that the show was known for. "There were a lot of times my dad would say, 'Meg, why don't you go and help with the craft services room over there? This is just a little off-color for your 11-year-old eyes.'" In fact, her father was so against her being privy to the show that she was forbidden from watching it at home as well. "I could watch the end credits so I could give the screen a kiss when I saw my dad's name go by," Markle explained. "You gotta think, there were guest stars like Tia Carrere and Traci Lords and Nikki Cox. Those were the kind of women coming in every day. Just picture me with my curly hair and a gap in my teeth and my little school uniform with Keds on, looking up like, 'Hi,' at these very, uh, provocative women," she recalled. "It was a big change from Immaculate Heart Catholic School."
Fortunately, however, all of Markle's time on set did prove to be useful later on in her own career...
Meghan Markle will always find her light on camera
Just a chip off the old block!
"I will always find my light. No question," Markle proudly declared in a 2013 interview about her ability to maneuver on set. "And if I don't, I'll know, because my dad will be the first person to call me and say like, 'You need to have him bring another 2K in,' and 'Why aren't you using this sort of lighting gel?'" Markle recounted. "The crew guys know that it's where I grew up."
But that's not all. Apparently, Markle knows her way around craft services as well. "Craft services guys know that it's where I spend a lot of my time, in craftie. So I can whip up a great snack on a whim with almost nothing," Markle revealed. Something tells us craft services would make for the ultimate after-school snack scene whilst working on homework and steering clear of all "off-color" subject matter.
