Inside Bill Belichick And Jon Bon Jovi's Relationship
Bill Belichick had quite a few famous friends, that's for sure. The New England Patriots head coach seems to have an in with pretty much anyone who's anyone, counting the likes of former Patriots player Tom Brady amongst his closest friends. In fact, it seems like Brady just hasn't been able to stop gushing about his pal over the years. "I feel like he's the best coach in the history of the NFL," Brady told TMZ Sports back in 2018. "He's an incredible coach. He's been an incredible mentor for me. He's taught me so much football," the now former New England Patriots player added.
But while Belichick's relationship with Brady is a little more expected as they worked together for years at the Patriots and, obviously, have a deep passion for making football their livelihood to bond over, someone you may not expect to hear is close with the coach is none other than Jon Bon Jovi. Yep, these may not be the first two people you think of when you think of famous faces who are good friends both in and outside of the spotlight, but it turns Bellichick and the legendary rock star actually go quite a way back.
Bill Belichick and Jon Bon Jovi first met in the '80s
When we said Bill Belichick and Jon Bon Jovi went way back, we meant way back. Back in 2017, Belichick dished on his lengthy friendship with the rocker after he attended the New England Patriots vs. Pittsburgh Steelers AFC Championship Game (which the Patriots won, by the way), watching on from a box. The whole crowd ended up singing along to Bon Jovi's iconic "Livin' On A Prayer," after which Belichick opened up about their bromance. He told ESPN they got close back in the 1980s when he was working with the New York Giants, Bon Jovi's then favorite team. "When I was coaching the Giants, we had a lot in common. We both liked the Giants," he shared. "We've shared a lot of great moments together, including the 1990 Super Bowl in Tampa where he was in the locker room after the game still taking crazy pictures and stuff like that; great memories from there," he continued, admitting he always loved seeing his good friend come out to support.
Bon Jovi has also dished on his lengthy relationship with Belichick. "He was just an assistant nobody back in the mid-'80s and we became pals. So wherever he and [Bill] Parcells went, I got to be the mascot," Bon Jovi explained on "The Howard Stern Show" in 2020. "Wherever these guys went, I would go and visit and stayed pals with everybody," he said. Aww!
Jon Bon Jovi became a Patriots fan because of Bill Belichick
Jon Bon Jovi has admitted to changing football allegiances because of his close relationship with Bill Belichick. Though he started out as a New York Giants fan, after forging a friendship with Belichick, he became a big supporter of the New England Patriots to show support for his pal... which only led to more friendships. "I became a very deep Patriots fan for a lot of years because my guys were there. [Bill] Parcells was there, Belichick was there. Then I became close to Mr. Kraft," he said on "The Howard Stern Show" in 2020, referring to Patriots owner Robert Kraft. "I was a fan there so long that [Tom] Brady was the backup quarterback when I was a fan," he added.
Just like with Belichick, that relationship with Kraft turned into something much deeper for Bon Jovi, who revealed he's attended the Patriots' training camps for years. But while Bon Jovi may be a Patriots fan, that didn't stop him from trying to buy a rival NFL team. Back in 2014, he attempted to buy the Buffalo Bills and turned to Kraft to help him through the process. "He helped me at the league level. And he helped me on a personal level, discussing all the details of ownership at great length with my family... We went through a lot in those 27 months," Bon Jovi told Sports Illustrated in 2018.
