What Is Balthazar Getty Doing Now?

Balthazar Getty may have a famous last name and ties to an eye-watering fortune, but he's always been determined to make it on his own. Just one question: what has the "Brothers And Sisters" actor been up to, of late?

First thing first, a note on Balthazar's background. Yes, he comes from the Getty family and is said to be worth an estimated $200 million. However, speaking to Evening Standard back in 2016, he explained that, at least as a kid, he had a decidedly humble home life. He was raised primarily by his mother, away from the Getty fortune. The Getty family was famously divided after the shocking kidnapping of John Paul III. Balthazar's father struggled, emotionally and physically, for the rest of his life following the traumatic kidnapping, and wasn't often with his son. Balthaqzar told The Hollywood Reporter that he moved in with his father in 1990, at the age of 15, and was soon after cast in the 1990 film, "Lord of the Flies."

The actor explained to Evening Standard that he never let comfortable in his father's world, saying, "It's termed Bread of Shame when you are given things that you don't earn." It makes sense, then, that he's always been eager to carve out a name for himself. So, what's he doing at the moment?

He's more focused on music, these days

With his resume including a long-running lead role on "Brothers And Sisters," a leading part in David Lynch's cult classic film "Lost Highway," and stints in several other productions, one would be forgiven for thinking acting was Balthazar Getty's greatest passion. However, that's a distinction reserved for music.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Getty revealed that his love for music began at the same time as his foray into acting. "I started DJing when I was 15," he said. While, at least professionally, that took a backseat for many years, more recently, he's shifted his focus onto that lifelong passion. In addition to founding his own record label and production company, in January 2023, he released his visual mixtape, rap album "80's Crack Baby."

It's worth noting that Getty has previously acknowledged that people may be taken aback by the music he makes, based on their perception of his life. However, speaking to amNY, he pointed out, "What people [don't] understand is how I actually grew up, you know?" Regardless of public reception, Getty has pointed out that he's got nothing but support from those in the industry. "What's cool is ... a lot of people in the culture know me and respect me and have co-signed it, so to speak," he told The Hollywood Reporter. Granted, that's not to say he wouldn't welcome more mainstream success. As he said to amNY, "It would be nice, you know, to have validation."

... and he's a visual artist and fashion designer, too

It's safe to say, Balthazar Getty is a creative soul, through and through. Case in point: on top of his acting and music careers, he's also dabbled in art and fashion, in the last few years.

In November 2020, said art and fashion were put on full display in a pop-up in Malibu. Speaking to WWD at the time, Getty revealed that the assortment of pieces on offer — which included the cartoon associated with his fashion brand, MonkPunk, as well as the streetwear itself — would give shoppers an opportunity to, "Pull the curtain aside and look into my brain a bit." It was a sentiment he doubled down on, when speaking of MonkPunk, more specifically. "It sums up a lot of who I am and my aesthetic as well," he told the outlet.

It certainly appears as though, like with his music, Getty has the fashion world's stamp of approval. In the past, Getty's brand has teamed up with some pretty big names in the luxury space. That would be, Chrome Hearts and Moncler. Not too shabby! One thing's for sure: this Getty heir is determined to make his mark on the world in his own way — and he's using his creative talents to do it.
