Strange Things About Miranda Kerr's Marriage

After Miranda Kerr ended her marriage to actor Orlando Bloom in 2013, the former Victoria's Secret supermodel fell into a devastating depression, she told ELLE Canada. Thankfully, that dark moment in her life didn't last long. Just two years later, she met billionaire Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel at an industry event, and the two hit it off. But their journey down the aisle was far from whimsical. In fact, it was downright strange.

Spiegel showed signs of being uninterested in the Aussie bombshell after their initial meeting, which is pretty hard to believe if you ask us. Kerr was even a bit taken aback at his lackluster approach to pursuing her. But all's well that ends well, and the couple got engaged in July 2016, complete with a photo of Kerr's massive engagement ring surrounded by Snapchat Bitmojis of the happy couple. A backyard wedding soon followed in May 2017, and the pair welcomed their first child together, a son named Hart, in May 2018. Their bundle of joy joined Kerr's son, Flynn, from her first marriage.

As happy as we are that she was able to find love again after her devastating split from Bloom, we can't ignore the utter wackiness that shrouds her new relationship. Here are all the strange things about Miranda Kerr's marriage.

He fell off the face of the Earth

They first laid eyes on each other in 2014 at a dinner in Los Angeles that was organized by luxury brand Louis Vuitton. The fashion world and the tech industry collided when Kerr and Spiegel were seated right next to each other. Kerr was already familiar with Snapchat, but she had no idea that she was sitting next to the app's co-founder...and soon-to-be billionaire, might we add.

"I was, like, 'He's cute . . . but he's way too young to take anything too seriously,'" Kerr told The Times in regards to Spiegel being eight years her junior. But despite their age difference, they spent the evening "connecting" before Spiegel had to leave the event abruptly to prepare for an important meeting in the morning. Um, what?! Meeting be damned! What guy would give up the opportunity to chat with a drop-dead gorgeous international supermodel until the wee hours of the morning? Well, if you thought Spiegel's hasty exit was weird, just wait, things are about to get even more kooky.

After exchanging numbers, Kerr told The Times they would speak to each other for a couple of months, but then their communication would wane for the next couple of months.  Basically, Spiegel was being inconsistent. "It was slow and steady. I was like, 'Is he even interested?' But once I let him know I was interested, he was very interested," she said.

A bizarre prediction

Before they even had their first conversation at that fated Louis Vuitton dinner where they first met, someone made a startling prediction. "The lady next to me, Glenda Bailey (pictured, right), she was like, 'I bet you two are going to get married.' I was like, 'What?' At the dinner. Just straight to marriage!" the Aussie stunner told Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Bailey, the editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar, was on the money, but Kerr was a bit more apprehensive. "I was like, whoa, we haven't even changed numbers or anything," she said as she recounted the story.

Although they bonded over their real estate purchases and the construction work that was going on at their respective homes, Kerr had no idea that the young guy who she had a brief conversation with on that day would be her future husband.

Someone set Bailey up with a 1-800 number ASAP. She could make a killing as a fortuneteller.

Snapping their way to love

Being married to a mobile app maven means Kerr is always ready and willing to promote her hubby's business. And she might as well be a spokesperson for Snapchat — the mobile app that allows users to post, send, and receive photos and videos for a 24-hour period before they magically disappear. "I'm obsessed with Snapchat," she told The Times. "And by the way, I'd be obsessed with Snapchat whether [Spiegel] was in my life or not," Yeah. Sure.

The interviewer noted that Kerr sent Spiegel a Snapchat message at the start of the interview, before noting that the couple continued to snap each other "almost constantly."

Since its launch in 2011, the app has been deemed as nothing more than a secretive and covert way to send explicit text messages and raunchy pictures. But, it's likely that Spiegel and Kerr were keeping their messages PG-13 and completing ignoring all of the app's wonderful sexting capabilities.

From the mile-high club to abstinence

Prior to becoming Mrs. Spiegel, Kerr was very candid about her robust sex life. In an interview with GQ magazine in April 2014 following her divorce from Bloom, she opened up about being attracted to both men and women. "I love the female body and truly appreciate the female form. I really enjoy sketching women, especially their backs," she said. "I definitely need a man in the bedroom, however — a nice strong chest to lie on. Still, I want to explore. Never say never."

She's even disclosed her membership in the mile-high club. "Let's put it this way, I've had an orgasm in the air before," Kerr told British GQ (via Elle). "Alone. And together." Go ahead and let that visual soak in for a moment, we won't judge you.

Since she has always been so open and liberated when it comes to sex, it's so dang weird that she completely flipped the script when she met Spiegel. In an interview with The Times, she revealed that they were "waiting" to consummate their relationship until after they tied the knot. Love will make you do some strange things. However, considering how sex played a huge part in her life pre-Spiegel, we're not entirely convinced they remained abstinent for two years before walking down the aisle.

The. Weirdest. Proposal. Ever.

Their super-traditional marriage means they adhere to stereotypical gender roles in their household. Kerr is content with soaking in her feminine aura, while Spiegel takes care of the masculine side of things. Kerr called it a "nice balance" to Net-a-Porter.

Their life together sounds lovely and all, but we wonder if the supermodel had second thoughts about their gender roles when it came time for Spiegel to propose. She told Female First she was absolutely shocked when he got down on one knee, but his words to her were even more surprising. "He said to me, 'Miranda, I'm telling you now, this is the first and last time I'm going to kneel down in front of you.'" WTF?

What an odd thing to say to the woman you love, right? Well, unsurprisingly, Kerr wasn't bothered by his declaration at all. "I was terribly nervous and emotional, trembling with happiness," she said.

Her son was on baby watch

Since there was allegedly no earth-shattering sex to be had during the duration of their courtship, we're sure this pair couldn't wait for their wedding night to roll around. And there was one other person who was equally as excited for Spiegel and Kerr to seal the deal: her son, Flynn.

While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (via People) prior to their May 2017 nuptials, Kerr said, "[Flynn is] so excited that Evan and I had been together for a while and he was like, 'When are we going to have another baby brother or sister?' And we were like, 'Look, we've got to get married first.'"

She continued by saying the day after their wedding, Flynn approached her. "He comes running in and he's like, 'Mommy, is [the baby] in there?' I was like, 'Honey, give it a minute.'" Um, awkward! Thankfully for Flynn, baby dust was in the air, and the couple announced in a statement just six months after their wedding that they were expecting a new addition to their family.

A nice dress is the key to a happy marriage

She may have traveled the world as one of the most sought-after models in the industry, but Kerr is now more content with living a relatively low-key life. When she's not at the headquarters for her Kora Organics skincare line, she's a total homebody who just can't wait for her husband to step through the front door.

To greet him after a long day of crafting new Snapchat filters (or whatever being the CEO of one of the hottest apps entails), Kerr makes sure to set the mood. "My grandma taught me that men are visual and you need to make a little effort," she told Net-a-Porter. "So when [Evan] comes home, I make sure to have a nice dress on and the candles lit. We make time to have a nice dinner together."

While she's prancing around in her feminine dress — which we're sure she looks flawless in BTW — she allows Spiegel "to be in his masculine." Okay, we're not too sure what that means exactly, but it seems to work, so more power to this wacky pair.

The bathtub is where the magic happens

While visiting The Kyle and Jackie O radio show (via Elle), Kerr opened up about their home life. And, as you can imagine, things got a bit strange when she discussed their nighttime ritual. After making her son dinner, she runs him a nice bath, she told the radio show. When he's as clean as a whistle and put into bed, Kerr will also "get in the bath" — a moment she calls her "special time."

By the time she's soaking in all the bubbles, her Snapchat co-founder hubby will arrive home and make his way to the bathroom. "The candles are on, then hopefully Evan gets home at that time and he gets to jump in with me," she told the radio hosts. "Then I'm all relaxed when he gets home, and we get to chat and catch up on each other's day."

It sounds like this whole family is serious about their bath time. Let's just hope they're not all splish splashing in the same bathwater, though. Blech

Hands off the little piggies!

Spiegel's dedication and hard work to Snapchat's parent company, Snap Inc., ultimately earned him the title of one of America's youngest billionaires in 2017 at the age of 27. He may not boast about his accomplishments in the tech industry, but his wife had no problem dishing about his work ethic in an interview with Elle magazine. "He doesn't stay out late, he works. ... He leaves the house at sometimes 5:30 in the morning, gets home at about 8," she told the magazine.

After he walks through the door of their $12 million Brentwood, Calif. mansion, "he likes to sit down and have dinner together, and catch up on our day," she told the publication. While Kerr is eager to please him and help him relax after a grueling day, he has his restrictions when it comes to unwinding. "He would rather me hug him than give him foot massages. He's like, 'Can you just come and cuddle up? Can we just snuggle? I don't need a foot massage.' I'm like, 'Come on, it's good for you!' ... He's very loving like that. I'm a very lucky girl."

We're not sure how he can turn down a foot massage from this beauty, but then again, it's just another testament to how strange their marriage is.
