Why Shakira Supposedly Doesn't Get Along With Gerard Pique's Mom
Shakira and Gerard Piqué had a complex end to their years-long relationship, and some of it had to do with Piqué's mother, Montserrat Bernabeu. Shakira and Bernabeu's relationship seemed to start off strong. In 2014, just a year after Piqué and Shakira welcomed their first child, the "Waka Waka" singer was seen spending time with her so-called "mother-in-law" and Piqué, per the Daily Mail. They were all smiles and laughter as they enjoyed a fun day out at an amusement park.
The good times only continued in 2015 when Shakira and Bernabeu attended one of Piqué's soccer games as they cheered on the athlete along with the musician and soccer player's sons, per Billboard. In 2021, the singer even joked with British Vogue about not taking her mother-in-law's advice after she got a short haircut at Bernabeu's suggestion. After being shown the photo of the hairstyle, Shakira said, "Oh, how terrible! That's a really bad haircut. I took advice from my mother-in-law ... Mother-in-law, I'm not taking cosmetic advice from you again."
While it seemed like the two had a great relationship, things shifted quickly when Shakira and Piqué split in 2022. And there's one major reason as to why Shakira had a sudden change of heart toward her mother-in-law.

There have been some messy breakups in Hollywood, but none quite as bad as Shakira and Gerard Piqué. Fans were shocked to see the couple announce their split after 11 years together, but as more details surfaced about their breakup, it started to make more sense. According to Page Six, Shakira had reportedly found out that the soccer player was cheating on her with Clara Chia Martí via a jar of jam. That's not even the craziest part of all this, because the "Hips Don't Lie" singer's mother-in-law, Montserrat Bernabeu, had apparently helped Piqué cheat on the superstar.
According to El Popular, Shakira and Bernabeu ended on terrible terms because the whole time the soccer star was cheating on the musician, Bernabeu knew. Even worse, she reportedly helped him keep it a secret by letting her son and Martí have hangouts at her house. Journalist Laura Fa alleges, "Everything is because when the relationship between Piqué and Clara Chía began, they took refuge in a house that Piqué's parents have in Cabrils (Spain)." Apparently, Shakira had even vented to her mother-in-law her suspicions about Piqué having an affair, and all the while, Bernabeu was helping out. While nothing has been confirmed by either party, Shakira's actions have made it seem like all the speculation is the truth.

Shakira has been quite vocal about her split from soccer player Gerard Piqué. And he isn't the only one in the line of fire as she has also made some jabs toward her mother-in-law, Montserrat Bernabeu. In 2023, the musician did what she does best and created a hit track titled, "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53," dissing her former partner, per The New York Post. But the singer also mentioned Bernabeu as she sang, "You left my mother-in-law as my neighbor, with the press at the door and the debt in the Treasury." Although this lyric wasn't too bad, the artist's following actions made it clear that she is not on great terms with her mother-in-law and neighbor, Bernabeu.
According to The New York Post, the "Whenever, Wherever" singer posted up a decorative witch facing Bernabeu's house. Safe to say it wasn't a late Halloween decoration because Shakira reportedly took it one step further by blasting her diss track toward her former mother-in-law's home.
As for Bernabeu, she is refusing to talk about her son and Shakira (via Hola). In her first interview since Piqué's breakup from the superstar, Bernabeu shared, "As everyone else does, I have a personal life and a professional life. But my personal life is only discussed with my closest friends and family." So, it looks like she won't spill any details on the split. But, it's clear that the once happy relationship Shakira and Bernabeu had has diminished.
