Why Demi Moore Wasn't Invited To Her Ex-Husband Freddy Moore's Funeral
When Demi Moore's ex-husband died, she was notably excluded from his funeral. Moore's first husband, singer Freddy Moore, and her second husband, actor Bruce Willis, have much more in common than sharing an ex-wife. Unfortunately, the Hollywood legends were both diagnosed with degenerative memory disorders. Freddy, whom Demi was married to from 1980 to 1985, died from Alzheimer's in August 2022 at age 72. Willis, who was married to Demi from 1987 to 2000, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2022.
Freddy lived for 12 years following his Alzheimer's diagnosis. Meanwhile, Willis's journey with frontotemporal dementia has only just begun. According to Cleveland Clinic, the average life expectancy for a patient with this disease is around seven years. With that said, the future is not written, and medical advancements could allow Willis to have a more positive outcome than Freddy. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for either disease at this time.
Since Willis's family made his condition public knowledge, Demi has spoken out in support of "The Sixth Sense" star. In March 2023, she even shared a sweet video of herself at Willis' 68th birthday party. "Happy birthday, BW!" Demi posted to Instagram. "So glad we could celebrate you today. Love you and love our family. Thank you to everyone for the love and warm wishes — we all feel them." Unfortunately, Demi wasn't able to find the same closure with Freddy. She wasn't allowed to attend his funeral. Here's why.
Freddy Moore's wife banned Demi Moore from his funeral
According to Freddy Moore's wife, Renee, Demi Moore didn't attend Freddy Moore's funeral because she didn't want her there. Renee shared the news with Radar in April 2023, alleging that, though Demi reached out to her before Freddy passed away, she questioned the actor's sincerity. "Before her book came out, she sent me an email asking me if there was anything she could do to help and you know, she there, she was trying to be very caring and everything," shared Renee. "I realized when [Demi's memoir] came out it was because she was going to say some things that were not so flattering about Rick [her nickname for Freddy] in the book and I think that was the whole purpose of her reaching out."
Renee was referring to Demi's 2019 memoir "Inside Out," in which she dove into her most salacious moments, including claims of infidelity. "The night before we got married, instead of working on my vows, I was calling a guy I'd met on a movie set," Demi shared in the memoir, per People. Given that Freddy's diagnosis prevented him from pushing back against Demi's narrative (whether true or not), it's not surprising the book caused a bunch of drama. That said, Demi has never confirmed that she had plans to attend Freddy's funeral, regardless. A sad situation all around!
How Demi Moore is helping Bruce Willis
Even though Demi Moore and Bruce Willis divorced more than 20 years ago, they've continued to nurture a healthy bond. Naturally, Demi has supported of her ex while he lives with frontotemporal dementia. In February 2022, Demi supported Bruce's family and helped spread the tragic news of his diagnosis to his fans. "Our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we have all received since sharing Bruce's original diagnosis, Demi posted to Instagram. "Bruce's condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD)."
Her support does have its limits however. Despite past reports that Demi had decided to take a more direct approach to helping care for Bruce by moving into his home, that's not the case. Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, immediately denied the reports. "Let's nip this one in the bud," Emma posted to her Instagram Story. "This is so dumb. Please stop."
